University of Southern Mississippi Police has arrested a suspect related to last Sunday’s hit-and-run accident on 4th Street in Hattiesburg that left one student injured.
The suspect is being held at the Forrest County Jail, and will be formally charged on Friday with a felony for “leaving the scene of an accident causing injury.”
University Police Chief Bob Hopkins said that officers were able to use camera footage from the scene of the accident to help identify the suspect, who was interviewed and arrested on Wednesday morning. The suspect is not a Southern Miss student.
The accident, which occurred Sunday evening, Sept. 23, around 6 p.m., involved a motorist in a white SUV striking a student traveling on bicycle across 4th Street in the crosswalk near the University’s parking garage and Century Park residence hall. The student’s injuries were not life-threatening.
