A University of Southern Mississippi Honors College student is the recipient of a prestigious National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship.

Kendall Moore, Jr., a sophomore computer science major from Madison, Miss. and a Presidential Scholar at Southern Miss, earned the award that includes funding for two academic years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time summer internship at a NOAA facility. It is named for retired U.S. Sen. Ernest F. Hollings of South Carolina.

To describe the race to acquire national scholarships in higher education as competitive is a little like saying Niagara Falls is wet.

Under the tireless guidance of National Scholarship Officer Robyn Curtis, the University of Southern Mississippi has emerged as a major player in these fierce competitions. And nothing exemplifies that success more than the current year which has produced two Goldwater Scholars; a Truman Scholar and two Fulbright Student Finalists.

The Speech and Debate team of The University of Southern Mississippi competed at the 100^th anniversary tournament and convention of Pi Kappa Delta National Honor Society, March 13-17 on the campus of Webster University in St. Louis. The field of competition included 86 colleges and universities from across the U.S., with seven students representing Southern Miss at the tournament.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism recently earned the Minority Recruitment and Retention Award from the Southern States Communication Association (SSCA).

University of Southern Mississippi students recently won awards in Jackson at the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters annual contest honoring the best in broadcast journalism in the state for 2012.

The Department of Marine Science and Center for Gulf Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi has announced the inauguration of the “Denis and Jean Wiesenburg Distinguished Lecture in Ocean Science.”

Dr. Stuart Rowan, a professor of macromolecular science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio will give the 11^th annual Bayer Distinguished Lecture Thursday, April 25 at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The lecture series is sponsored by Bayer MaterialScience and hosted by the Southern Miss School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.

The University of Southern Mississippi will end its Spring 2013 theatre season with the musical production of Assassins, written by Stephen Sondheim and Charles Weidman. Showtimes are April 18-20, April 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. in Tatum Theatre in the Theatre and Dance Building. Admission for general public is $14; faculty, staff, seniors and military is $10; student tickets are $8.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Dance will host the second residency of the spring semester with Maryland-based Adrienne Clancy and her company ClancyWorks. Now through April 21, the well-respected dance company returns to teach additional master classes and partner with Southern Miss dance majors in K-12 educational outreach events.

Mississippi’s leading broadcasters from across the state will meet with and mentor students for the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Day Thursday, April 18 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.
