University of Southern Mississippi sophomore Tyler Brown, of Biloxi, Miss., has been awarded the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society’s Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship.

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Marine Science will get a new neighbor and potential research partner with the recent announcement by Gov. Phil Bryant that the National Oceans and Applications Research Center (NOARC) will be located at the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Miss.

The School of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi will soon take a giant leap in healthcare education and training by offering the state’s first degree-granting nurse anesthesia program.

 

The new program will include 36 consecutive months of study and award a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. School of Nursing officials hope to receive final approval from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs in October with classes set to begin in January 2013.

Dr. Kim LeDuff, associate director of The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism, will present the 19th annual Armstrong-Branch Lecture Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the university's Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free.

More than 500 students, parents, and community supporters gathered on March 29th for the College of Health’s annual Awards Night. 

This event is an opportunity for each school and department in the college to award their outstanding students and to recognize them for their accomplishments.  Awards were given for accomplishments ranging from academic success to extracurricular activity.

Dr. Steven Jackson received the Joseph A. Greene Excellence in Teaching Award during the annual College of Business Honors Banquet held April 4 at the Thad Cochran Center.

Jackson is an associate professor in the School of Accountancy at Southern Miss. Dr. Melinda Andrews and Dr. John Lambert were the other finalists for the Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Honors Banquet also included the induction of new members into the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha D. Saunders announced today that Vice President for Research Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has been named as the university’s next provost, pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The change is effective July 1.

The annual spring Roots Reunion live radio show returns to Hattiesburg's historic Saenger Theater Saturday, April 14th at 7 p.m.  for a celebration of the signature music of our state and region.

Mississippi’s leading broadcasters from across the state will meet with and mentor students for the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Day on April 19 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The Rotary Club of Hattiesburg will conduct its annual “A Night in Italy” spaghetti dinner on Tuesday, April 17 at Southern Oaks House & Gardens with proceeds benefitting The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Take-out or eat-in dinners will be available from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Southern Oaks on Richburg Road in Hattiesburg. Tickets are $10 each for a complete dinner consisting of spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert and tea.

The 45th annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival will be held April 11-13 at the Thad Cochran Center on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. It is presented by the university’s School of Library and Information Science and de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection.

United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia delivered a lecture on "The Methodology of Originalism" as part of The University of Southern Mississippi's Honors Forum Series on Wednesday, April 4.

The University of Southern Mississippi was well represented at the 2012 Mississippi State Level Science and Engineering Fair held at the Mississippi Coast Convention Center in Biloxi on March 27.

Malcolm White, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission, spoke to an audience of more than 75 Southern Miss administrators, faculty, staff and students about the Creative Economy study and the role universities can play.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Health and Center on Aging will host a viewing of the Hospice Foundation of America’s (HFA) 19th Annual Living with Grief® program set for Thursday, April 19 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The list of career accolades continues to grow for University of Southern Mississippi polymer science researcher Dr. Robert Lochhead, who has been selected to receive the Chemical Pioneer Award by the American Institute of Chemists (AIC).

Dr. Frances A. Karnes, distinguished university professor in the department of curriculum, instruction and special education at The University of Southern Mississippi and director of the Frances Karnes Center for Gifted Studies; Dr. Kristen Stephens, assistant professor at Duke University; and John Dudley, a doctoral student in political science at the University of Mississippi, have written a chapter in the book, “Identification-The Theory and Practice of Identifying Students for Gifted and Talented Education Services,” published by Creative Learning Press and edited by Scott Hunsaker.

The Friends of the University Libraries at The University of Southern Mississippi recently funded new electronic books for the libraries’ nursing collection. The donation comes during a trend toward online learning within the field.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Polymers and High Performance Materials will host a group of high school students Friday, March 30 who will be challenged in competition to engineer a polymer project to be tested on laboratory equipment at the school.
