A 1931 graduate’s donation to her alma mater is being used to honor the research and teaching efforts of junior faculty members at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) has honored two University of Southern Mississippi students, providing one with funding for graduate study and another with recognition of her outstanding academic achievements.

Dr. D. Jay Grimes, professor of marine microbiology in the Department of Coastal Sciences at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) has been chosen to chair the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Oceans and Human Health at the University of New England, Biddeford, Maine on June 3- 8.

Continuing a commitment to promote common goals between higher education and industry, The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) invitedindustry professionals to its Industry Advisory Council (IAC) Summit Thursday at the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

For University of Southern Mississippi nursing student Kara Scott, simulation exercises provide the next-best-thing to actual patient care.

 

“As students we don’t get to do things like call physicians or administer IV push medications,” said Scott, a junior from Slidell, La. “But with the simulation training, we get to experience those kinds of scenarios. It allows us to be involved in decision making and delegating different procedures.”

For some international business students at The University of Southern Mississippi, completing a senior capstone project involved learning trade agreements and export regulations in countries as far away as France.

To celebrate the end of the 2011-12 school year, the College of Science and Technology hosted an appreciation lunch for more than 200 faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and graduate assistants.  The event gave students, faculty, staff, and administration to celebrate the end of the semester and graduation.

Dr. Louis Kyriakoudes, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi, gave the prestigious Alfred Dupont Chandler, Jr. Lecture to open the 2012 Global American South Symposium April 21 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

 

The new Nurse Anesthesia Program in The University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing will conduct a series of information sessions, beginning next month and running into April of 2013.

Southern Miss officials and noted dignitaries gathered on Thursday, May 10, to break ground on Scianna Hall, a 93,000-square-foot facility that will sit adjacent to the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship, facing U.S. 49 South.

This year’s theme, SMASH-Ed, Southern Miss All-Stars of Health Education, featured Broadway trivia and a special dance number performed by the reigning Crowd Favorite from the Southern Miss Dancing with Deans, Dr. Michael Forster, and his partner Mrs. Dianne Coleman. 

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Career Services recently offered a seminar for preprofessional students designed to assist them in interview preparation, writing personal statements for applications, and overall resume and professional school application preparation. 

The seminar was sponsored by the College of Science and Technology Premedical and Health Professions Office.

Dr. Barry Farmer, chief scientist of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, visited the University of Southern Mississippi campus recently discussing advanced materials and their application, including being enablers for new technology and possible limiters for performance.

After years of intensive study, University of Southern Mississippi seniors in painting and drawing will celebrate their accomplishments by presenting their senior projects in the Museum of Artwith an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday May 8.

Tara Burcham, coordinator of public relations in the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi, won two professional awards at the 2012 Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) awards banquet held recently in Columbus, Miss.
