The Office of Admissions at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach recently hired Dr. Kimberly C. Scherlofsky as an admissions counselor to focus on university recruiting and community outreach in the business, government, and industry sectors along the Gulf Coast.

 

Dr. Douglas Bristol, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus, was named one of two finalists representing the university in a national competition for a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) summer stipend.

Dr. Marie des Neiges Léonard, assistant professor of sociology at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus, recently presented the paper, “Census and Racial Identity in France: Invisible Categories and Color-Blind Politics,” while attending the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting in New York City.

 

Dr. Bill Smith, a veteran member of the College of Business faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi, was recently appointed chairman of the college’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The appointment was announced by Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the college.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 25 at 4 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Ascension in Hattiesburg for Virginia Alice Price Shands Covington, a former professor of speech communication at The University of Southern Mississippi, who died at her home in Hattiesburg July 29. She was 84.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has announced that Dr. Patricia Biesiot, associate dean in the College of Science and Technology, will serve as interim dean during the college’s period of transition.

 

Dr. Shahdad Naghshpour, professor of International Development at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus, authored the recently published book, “The Fundamentals of Money and Financial Systems.”

The Office of Communications at The University of Southern Mississippi captured 11 awards – including a Grand Award for Print Media -- during the 2013 College Public Relations Association of Mississippi (CPRAM) Conference held May 20-21 in Gulfport, Miss.

Sarah Case-Price began her affiliation with The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi more than a dozen years ago as a student worker. On July 1, she will take over the reins as director.

Longtime higher education administrator Dr. Douglas Vinzant has been named the new Vice President for Finance and Administration at The University of Southern Mississippi. Pending IHL Board approval, Vinzant will begin his duties on June 17.

The Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its first Alumni Group Dinner on Wednesday, April 24 at Lake Terrace Convention Center. 

The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation has announced Dr. Shannon Fleming as its next Executive Director, effective June 3. In this role, Fleming will serve as the chief staff executive for the USM Foundation, in addition to serving as the director of development for the University, and will be responsible for the Foundation’s strategic leadership, attainment of goals and objectives, coordination of fundraising activities and board management.

Each year, The University of Southern Mississippi hosts its Founders Day Ceremony in conjunction with the founding of the University on March 30, 1910.  During this ceremony, faculty, staff and students are recognized for their accomplishments and awards are presented to deserving recipients.

Exemplifying the excellence demonstrated in the College, several college faculty, staff and students that were recognized during this year's ceremony included:

Founders’ Day on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus April 1 was a celebration of the institution’s past, its future and the people who have made it what it is today.

 

It was also the first day of the presidency of Dr. Rodney Bennett, the University’s 10th executive officer.

Dr. Jay Dean takes to the podium for the last time in his 25th season with The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra when he conducts Mahler’s Fifth Symphony on Thursday, March 28 at Bennett Auditorium.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Peck House for University of Southern Mississippi Professor Kenneth Vance Watson. The Peck House, which is part of the Southern Miss campus, is located at 3601 Pearl St.

A faculty member with an exemplary record of research and service in public health and an Honors College student heading to medical school are The University of Southern Mississippi’s recipients of the annual Higher Education Appreciation Day, Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) award.

Dr. Sarah Morgan, associate professor in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Ray C. Anderson Foundation that will be used in her continuing solar cells research.

Dr. Mohamed Elasri, associate professor of biological sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded a $439,000 grant by the National Institutes of Health to assist in his research of the staphylococcus aureus human pathogen.

University of Southern Mississippi Vice Provost for Research Dr. Gordon Cannon has announced that Chase Kasper will become the director of the Office of Technology Development, effective Feb. 1.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has announced that David Sliman will become the University’s Chief Information Officer, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

The Provost’s Office is asking Southern Miss students and faculty to assist in the Fall 2012 Textbook Survey that is now available on SOAR. Faculty and students will find separate surveys, which must be completed before midnight on Friday, Nov. 16 to be included in the final results.

Several University of Southern Mississippi faculty members will take the stage with the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra to perform an exciting program of classical and classical-style pieces at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Bennett Auditorium.

Dr. Bill Holcomb will serve as the new director of Athletic Training Education Program in the School of Human Performance and Recreation in the College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi.
