Effective Jan. 1, 2011 new federal legislation reduces the social security taxes withheld from employees from 6.2% to 4.2% for calendar year 2011.

Also, effective Dec. 31, 2010 The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (stimulus bill) which included “The Making Work Pay” tax credit ended.

Human Resources reminds all participants age 18 and older to complete the HealthQuotient health risk assessment after January 1, 2011 to be eligible for the wellness/preventive benefits. The Web site for the HealthQuotient is https://www.webmdhealth.com/Mississippi.

Those who do not have Internet access can call WebMD at 1.866.789.4594 to request a paper copy. The HQ must be completed each year prior to a wellness/preventive visit for participants to be eligible for these benefits.

A committee of deans and faculty members at The University of Southern Mississippi has completed the appeals process for programs slated to be eliminated and presented its report to President Martha Saunders.

Polly Odom, executive secretary to University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders, received the Jessie H. Morrison Award for staff excellence during ceremonies held Tuesday, Dec. 7 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Jennifer Payne, a University of Southern Mississippi speech communication graduate, has accepted the position of associate director for external affairs with the Southern Miss Alumni Association.

The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., on the Hattiesburg campus in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballrooms I and III.

The Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning recently voted to offer new four-year contracts to University of Southern Mississippi President Dr. Martha Saunders and Delta State University President Dr. John M. Hilpert, becoming effective as current contracts expire.

Mike Bonnette has been named the new Associate Director for Development of The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation as its development staff transitions from college-based fundraising to initiative-based fundraising.

The University of Southern Mississippi has appointed Dr. Chris Crenshaw to serve as director of its Physical Plant, beginning Sept. 1. Crenshaw is currently director of the university’s Department of Residence Life, a position he has held the past five years.
