University of Southern Mississippi senior Eileen Dominguez, a tourism management major from Honduras, spent the majority of her spring semester as an intern with American Greetings Corp.

Chad R. Miller, University of Southern Mississippi assistant professor of Economic Development, was voted chair-elect of the American Society for Public Administration's (ASPA) Transportation Policy & Administration section. Miller was elected at the recent national ASPA conference in New Orleans.

Students in the Department of Casino, Hospitality and Tourism Management at The University of Southern Mississippi will present their capstone projects during the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association’s monthly meeting on Thursday, April 25.

A team of students at The University of Southern Mississippi was named a regional champion at the Enactus United States Regional Competition held April 10 in Dallas, Texas. As an Enactus U.S. regional champion, the Southern Miss team advances to the 2013 Enactus U.S. National Exposition in Kansas City, Mo., May 21-23.

Nancy Duarte spent just one year as a student at The University of Southern Mississippi, but that brief foray into higher education played a significant role in shaping the successful businesswoman she has become today.

 

On Thursday, April 11 the university’s College of Business acknowledged Duarte’s impressive success story with the annual Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award during a ceremony held on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Miss.

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi paid tribute to distinguished faculty members and students during its annual Honors Banquet held Tuesday, March 26 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

Dr. Bret Becton received the Joseph A. Greene Teaching Award, while Dr. Fujun Lai took home the Louis K. Brandt Publication Award. Other award winners from each department include the following:

University of Southern Mississippi seniors Jazmyne Butler and Ashley Betts have been invited to join a prestigious group of collegiate standouts as part of the Clinton Global Initiative University.

Dr. Faye Gilbert, who earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in business administration at The University of Southern Mississippi, will return to her alma mater as the next dean of the University’s College of Business. Pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, her official start date will be July 1.

Economic trends and forecasts will be the focus of a special symposium presented by the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Trent Lott Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

Innovate Mississippi (formerly the Mississippi Technology Alliance) has announced that Startup Weekend Jackson will take place Jan. 18-20 at Millsaps College. Startup Weekend is an intense 54-hour event powered by the Kauffman Foundation that operates worldwide and brings together like-minded entrepreneurs for a weekend of company creation.

The University of Southern Mississippi plans to restore its masters of business administration program on the Hattiesburg campus for the fall 2013 semester.

 

The program was shifted from the Hattiesburg campus to the Gulf Coast-only format in fall 2011 as part of budget cuts within the Southern Miss College of Business in 2010.

Dr. Steven Jackson has received the 2012 Joseph A. Greene Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Retired businessman Spencer Adams and budding entrepreneur Jared Loftus were honored as Alumni of the Year by The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business during a luncheon on Friday, Nov. 2 at Southern Oaks in Hattiesburg.

 

Adams, former president and CEO of Pickett & Adams Insurance, received the Boardman Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. Loftus, president and CEO of online apparel store College District, was presented the Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year Award.

The Provost’s Office is asking Southern Miss students and faculty to assist in the Fall 2012 Textbook Survey that is now available on SOAR. Faculty and students will find separate surveys, which must be completed before midnight on Friday, Nov. 16 to be included in the final results.
