The United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a U.S. District Court’s favorable ruling for The University of Southern Mississippi in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former graduate student at the University.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT), in collaboration with the 184th Sustainment Command, will present a free webinar “Logistics within the Mississippi National Guard” at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 5.

The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Gulf Coast Celebration of the Inauguration of Dr. Rodney D. Bennett as the tenth president of the university on Thursday, May 1, from 4 – 6 p.m. in the Hardy Hall ballroom on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi is hoping to gain valuable input regarding mid-and-long-range needs from campus constituents and members of the Hattiesburg community during a pair of open forums scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday, April 30.

Dr. Frances Lucas, Vice President of the The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus, was inducted into the Roland Weeks Leadership Hall of Fame Class of 2013 on Wednesday, April 23 as one of 10 top community leaders.

In recognition of outstanding student achievement, The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus hosted the 2014 Awards Day Ceremony in the Hardy Hall ballroom on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

As part of autism awareness month, the Institute for Disability Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi will hold a “Screening for Autism Day” in several cities throughout the State. 

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach has reached record enrollment in the number of students enrolled to earn their master’s degree. For the spring 2014 semester, a total of 361 graduate students are working to earn one of 11 master’s degrees available to students at the university’s Gulf Park campus.

More than 35 years in higher education, which includes extensive administrative and engineering credentials, made Dr. David T. Hayhurst the clear choice to become the new dean of the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi.

 

Hayhurst previously served as dean of the College of Engineering at both San Diego State University (2002-2013) and the University of South Alabama (1992-2002). Pending approval by the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning, Hayhurst will begin his new role at Southern Miss on August 15.

The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, along with Dr. D. Jay and Beverly Grimes, will be hosting a free seminar by Dr. Bill Hogarth, director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) Tuesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. at the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center for Arts and Education. This will be the sixth presentation in the Grimes Distinguished Lecture Series.

After The University of Southern Mississippi Technology Learning Center (TLC) Golden Eagles wheelchair basketball team won the Gulf Coast Conference Championship for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA), the group headed to Louisville, Ky. to compete in the 2014 NWBA national championships where they finished the season 17th in the nation among more than 300 other Division III teams.

The second installment of the four-part seminar series, “Catch More Fish with Science,” will be held Thursday, April 17 at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL).

The University of Southern Mississippi has selected Dr. John Eye to lead its University Libraries as dean, following a national search to fill the position.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Health, in conjunction with Hattiesburg Clinic, will present a Spring Health Forum from noon-3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

 

The University of Southern Mississippi will celebrate Homecoming 2014 on Nov. 8, when the football Golden Eagles take on Conference USA rival Marshall at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Social Work, Department of Biological Sciences, and Center for Science and Mathematics Education will host a Science Careers and Research Encounters program for teachers, counselors, and ninth through twelfth students on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Lloyd Hall on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

A University of Southern Mississippi student has been charged with aggravated assault following an altercation that occurred late Saturday night at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity house on the Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi student Bethany Cuevas of Long Beach won the title of Miss Mid-South this past January and will have the chance to compete for the title of Miss Mississippi this summer in Vicksburg.

A resolution unanimously approved this afternoon (April 4) by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Faculty Senate condemned violence against an off-campus Islamic Center.

The highly anticipated University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s production of Showbiz Showstoppers has announced a few surprise guests set to join the cast during its performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

With a renewed focus on creating pathways to completion for University of Southern Mississippi students, the institution’s students, faculty and staff have accomplished a great deal during the first year under Rodney D. Bennett’s leadership. Today, Tuesday, April 1, 2014, marks the anniversary of his official start as the University’s 10th president.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus celebrated the university’s Founders’ Day with a reception honoring employees for continuous service of 10, 20, and 30 years to Southern Miss. In recognition of their service, honored employees received a commemorative pin from the university.

The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi will present Showbiz Showstoppers, a one-night-only spectacular featuring numbers from some of Broadway’s best musicals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg.

 

The Southern Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) launched its annual series of regional qualifier business plan competitions on March 25-26 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.
