The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Biological Sciences will host outreach activities this fall, including unique adventures at its popular science museum.

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi is currently enrolling for an after-school program to serve young struggling readers.

 

The Language Enhancement and Achievement Program (LEAP) is designed for students ages 5 through 10 with challenges in reading, spelling and written language, who may or may not have a diagnosis of dyslexia.

Mississippi Home of Your Own (HOYO) will sponsor a free, one-day homebuyer education workshop on Saturday, August 25 for residents with and without disabilities in George and surrounding counties.

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi will host a comprehensive Multisensory Math seminar on Sept. 13-14 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) will hold a workshop on fair housing at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at the Mississippi State Extension Building at 982 Second South Street in Woodville, Miss.

The workshop will focus on fair housing, housing discrimination, the housing rights of individuals, how to file a housing complaint and other fair housing information. Refreshments will be provided.

The University of Southern Mississippi will offer an introductory course emphasizing elected officials’ role in community and economic development on Tuesday, April 24 on the Hattiesburg campus. The course is the first of its kind to be offered in this region of the state.

A decade of transforming lives and communities for the better will be celebrated March 21-23 when The University of Southern Mississippi hosts the Gulf South Summit on Service Learning and Civic Engagement Through Higher Education at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center.

NASCAR President Mike Helton offered a salient question to a packed crowd on the opening day of the 2011 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

 

“How do you place a value on being safe?” asked Helton, who delivered one of the keynote addresses to those gathered at the Roosevelt Hotel for the three-day conference. “For us in the sports industry, we have to be able to sleep at night knowing we did everything possible to keep our fans safe.”

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach will offer a series of training opportunities during the month of August.

A total of 13 sports facilities will be recognized for their achievements in security as part of the 2011 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition set for Aug. 2-4 in New Orleans.
