The Southern Miss School of Human Performance and Recreation’s therapeutic recreation program received a proclamation from Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree on Feb. 7 declaring February 2012 as Therapeutic Recreation Month in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Five University of Southern Mississippi employees were recently chosen for leadership positions with the Hattiesburg Geographic Interest Group (GIG) of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD).

The University of Southern Mississippi Chapter of the Association of Office Professionals (AOP) recently presented proceeds from its annual Santa’s Bargain Basement Mega Garage Sale in December to the United Way of Southeast Mississippi.

The most important aspect of embracing diversity is for individuals to recognize that no matter how different we all seem from the outside, we’re all still human and face similar challenges.

 

That’s the philosophy held by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Dr. Kim LeDuff, associate professor and associate director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, who says her work as an educator allows her to fulfill her commitment to inclusiveness and educating people about the importance of diversity in an increasingly multicultural society.

Tuesday’s much anticipated “Dancing with the Deans” event at a packed Thad Cochran Center Ballroom on the University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus treated its audience to a mix of Fred Astaire-style agility and a few disco-inspired flashbacks.

 

Featuring Southern Miss administrators and their dance partners, the event was held in conjunction with the formal kickoff of the university’s 2012 Campaign for Southern Miss.

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of the Provost recently announced members of its faculty as recipients of various prestigious grants and honors. Excellence in instruction, research, leadership, mentorship, librarianship and service to the university were among the key criteria used in selection of the recipients.

University of Southern Mississippi administrators and members of their staffs are ready to show off their best moves on the dance floor in conjunction with the formal kickoff of the university’s 2012 Campaign for Southern Miss.  

University of Southern Mississippi students will join members of the faculty and staff as part of the entrepreneurial venture known as Startup Weekend, set for Feb. 10-12 at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss.

An article in a recent issue of the Journal of Hydrology details how a team of scientists headed by researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi found that Hurricane Katrina had minimal long term impact on the water quality of the East Pearl River in southwest Mississippi.

 

Dr. Frances Karnes, distiguished university professor of curriculum, instruction and special education and director of the Frances Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi; and Dr. Kristen Stephens, assistant professor of education and licensure officer at Duke University, have co-authored another book on girls titled Sports and Athletics: A Girls and Young Women's Guide for Success.

Dr. Philip C. Kolin, University Distinguished Professor of English in the College of Arts and Letters, recently had the 10thedition of his widely used Successful Writing at Work published through Cengage/Wadsworth, a leading textbook publisher.

The spring 2012 Science Café series opener at The University of Southern Mississippi will focus on the growing interest in fish in the U.S., and feature a presentation by a member of the school’s faculty who is knowledgeable about the aquatic animal.

Dr. Julian Allen, director, Special Operations and Public Safety Technology & Training Programs at The University of Southern Mississippi, will serve as a judge in final-round selections for the 2012 All-USA Community College Academic Team.

I have always had a love for the game of baseball. Like many kids today, I started playing organized baseball in the first grade and continued playing recreationally through graduate school. I liked every aspect of the game as well as the camaraderie and culture. 

Dr. Mary Lou Sheffer, associate professor in The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Mass Communication and Journalism, is the recipient of a fellowship from the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE).

Russ Willis has announced that he will be transitioning from the position of Vice President for Administrative Affairs at The University of Southern Mississippi to a role with the University Foundation, effective Feb. 1. Chad Driskell, Executive Assistant to the President for External Affairs, will replace him on an interim basis, while Willis will join the staff of the USM Foundation as Assistant Director for Fundraising Initiatives and Planned Giving.

Josh Duplantis, assistant director for the Union in the Office of Community Service Learning at The University of Southern Mississippi, harbors a deep passion for student achievement, particularly in the area of community outreach.

A new book by a University of Southern Mississippi history professor contends attitudes about the role of men and women in American society were unmasked in a profound way during the Vietnam War, including their impact in shaping U.S. foreign policy.

Dr. Geoffrey Hudson, assistant professor of exercise science at The University of Southern Mississippi, has partnered with four undergraduate students on an important research project involving weight loss supplements.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business has maintained its coveted status as a dually accredited business and accounting school as determined by the Board of Directors of AACSB – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

 

This designation places Southern Miss in exclusive company as one of only 643 AACSB accredited schools in the world and just 475 in the United States. More impressively, Southern Miss is one of only 167 schools in the U.S. that are separately accredited in business and accounting.

University of Southern Mississippi Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced his retirement today, effective in early January and will remain with the program through the coaching search process. 

Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, credits assistant professor Kimberly Goodwin for reinvigorating a dormant real estate degree program.

Ryan Kelly, director of external relations in the College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected as the new executive director of the Mississippi Rural Health Association (MRHA).

Dr. Kathy Yadrick, professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi has assumed additional duties as part-time associate dean for research in the College of Health.
