As the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS⁴) continues to evolve, recognition within the security industry grows as well. Recently, NCS⁴ Director Dr. Lou Marciani was recognized by Security magazine as one of the most influential people in security as part of an annual feature in the monthly publication.

Linthicum Receives Two Silver ADDY Awards at Advertising Federation Banquet

Francesca Linthicum, graphic designer and communication specialist for The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, was the recipient of two silver ADDY awards at the Mississippi Gulf Coast American Advertising Federation awards show Feb. 19 at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.

Linthicum received an award in the mixed media for local consumer category for her entry, “Welcome Week.” Her second award was for the entry, “Heart Walk Tee” in the public service for direct marketing category.

Obituary: Dr. Joon Chang Lee, Professor Emeritus of Physics

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. at Korean Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, located at 310 Ronie St., for Dr. Joon Chang Lee, a University of Southern Mississippi Professor Emeritus of Physicswho died at his home in Hattiesburg Sunday, Feb. 13. He was 73.

Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Barton Spencer, Head of Electronic Resources, University Libraries

Jay Barton Spencer, head of electronic resources for The University of Southern Mississippi University Libraries, died Saturday, Feb. 12 at his home in Hattiesburg. He was 45.

Funeral services for Spencer will be Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, located at 4901 Hardy St., with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg. A visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, located at 805 Hardy St.

Psychology Professor Southern Miss’ Nominee for IHL Black Educator Award

In a legacy handed down by her parents, Dr. Andrea Wesley is lighting the way for her students.

Wesley, a veteran member of The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology faculty, is the university’s nominee for the State Institutions of Higher Learning’s (IHL) Black Educator of the Year award, held in conjunction with Black History Month.

Southern Miss Names Willis Vice President of Administrative Affairs

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders has appointed Russ Willis Vice President of Administrative Affairs, pending approval by the IHL Board of Trustees.

Willis has served as interim vice president since August 2010. Following approval, his appointment will take effect July 1, 2011. His duties include the overall financial management of the university and its physical plant.

Baker, Lockett Receive Staff Council Awards

University of Southern Mississippi employees Rich Baker and Elayne Lockett have been recognized for their commitment to the university as recipients of the annual Staff Council Service Award.

Baker, who won the fall 2010 honor, is executive assistant in technology support, while Lockett, the spring 2011 honoree, serves as information services supervisor in University Libraries. The winners are selected from nominations made by their peers on campus.

Funeral Services set for Dr. Bobby Anderson, former dean of College of Education and Psychology

Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 at Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Grove for Dr. Bobby Anderson, former dean of the University of Southern Mississippi College of Education and Psychology, who died Feb. 7 at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. He was 78.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, Wednesday Feb. 9 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg following Thursday’s service.

New Changes in Payroll Withholdings

Effective Jan. 1, 2011 new federal legislation reduces the social security taxes withheld from employees from 6.2% to 4.2% for calendar year 2011.

Also, effective Dec. 31, 2010 The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 (stimulus bill) which included “The Making Work Pay” tax credit ended.

Polymer Professor Wins Prestigious National Science Foundation Grant

Much to his amazement, University of Southern Mississippi professor Derek Patton discovered that even the longest of shots can find the intended bulls-eye where higher education is concerned.

Patton, 33, assistant professor in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials, learned recently that he had been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER grant designed to recognize outstanding work by junior faculty across the country.
