Does a school board’s management style play a significant role in student academic achievement?

 

That’s the question University of Southern Mississippi educational leadership professor Dr. David Lee and some of his graduate students hope to answer through a research project examining correlations between high and low-achieving school districts and the behavior, decisions and personalities of the boards that govern them.

The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi welcomed six new members to its staff this fall, including three speech-language pathologists (SLPs), two teacher assistants and a communications coordinator.

Dr. Robin Overstreet, longtime scientist at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), is being featured as part of a special series on influential researchers at the lab who are retiring or near retirement.

Dr. Sandra Bishop, assistant professor in the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been named associate dean for the college. The College of Nursing was elevated from a school to one of six Southern Miss colleges effective July 1.

Dr. Mike Forster, dean of the College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected as one of the top 100 Awesome Deans of Public Health by the online publication MPHProgramsList.com.

Dr. Heather Annulis, associate professor and assistant director of the Workplace Learning and Performance Institute at The University of Southern Mississippi, delivered a presentation during the 12th International Conference on Knowledge, Culture and Change Management earlier this month in Chicago.

The topic of her paper was "Change Leaders' Reflections of Hurricane Katrina: A Qualitative Review." Janea McDonald, a current doctoral student in human capital development, served as co-presenter.

Two University of Southern Mississippi administrators have been promoted, with Fran Jones as the new director of Union and Programs and Josh Duplantis director of the Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL).

Chad Driskell, executive assistant to the president at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected to fill a vacancy on the Area Development Partnership’s Board of Directors created when former Southern Miss President Martha Saunders stepped down in June.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has announced that Dr. Joseph Peyrefitte, senior associate dean in the College of Business, will serve as interim dean during the college’s period of transition.

What do Antarctica and Mars have in common? Turns out, just enough to suit University of Southern Mississippi marine science Assistant Professor Scott Milroy.

 

Thanks to a NASA-funded research grant, Milroy is embarking on a year-long project that includes an attempt to grow a form of blue-green algae – known as cyanobacteria – in incubation chambers at the Stennis Space Center. Milroy hopes to mimic conditions that exist on the surface of Mars.

Jessica Hobart, recreational sports assistant director for aquatics and outdoors at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been reappointed as the chair of the Career Opportunities Center Committee for the 2012-2013 year for the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

Dr. Ray Newman, a longtime health care executive and higher education scholar, has been named chair of the Department of Community Health Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Faculty and graduate students in The University of Southern Mississippi School of Social Work will aid in the Gulf Coast’s recovery from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by addressing the mental health needs of those still impacted by the April 2010 disaster.

 

An allocation of more than $100 million in funds from the BP Health Settlement was designated for expanding residents’ access to health care and enhancing the skills of health care providers in the affected area. More than $8.2 million of that is going to Southern Miss for its role in the Mental and Behavioral Health Capacity Building Project (MBHCBP).

Dr. Martha Saunders returned to The University of Southern Mississippi in 2007 pledging to “build trust, build a team and build a campus.” After five years of leading her alma mater as its ninth president, she returns to its faculty having done that and much more.

 

Saunders announced her resignation from the presidency in April and will leave her post on Friday, at which time she will join the faculty at Southern Miss Gulf Coast.

With 32 percent of full time University employees making gifts to The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation, the 2012 Campaign for Southern Miss has exceeded its goal.

 

The Campaign, which was an effort to increase the number of Southern Miss faculty and staff that give back to the University through the USM Foundation, began on July 1, 2011, and will end on June 30, 2012.

Dr. Katherine Nugent, director of the School of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi, will see her title elevated to dean when the school officially returns to college status on July 1.

Dr. Tom Estes has been named interim vice president for finance and administration at The University of Southern Mississippi, Interim President Dr. Aubrey Lucas announced today. Estes previously served as vice president for business and finance from 1976 to 1992.
