Jason Powell, a Collins, Miss. native who is a detective with The University of Southern Mississippi Police Department, received the department’s prestigious Medal of Valor during a ceremony held on the university’s Hattiesburg campus in June.

Patricia Munn, an instructor in the School of Accountancy at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been named the 2013 Outstanding Educator by the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA).

Dr. Casey Maugh, assistant professor of communication studies at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, recently had her book chapter “Blogging for Peace: Realistic job preview strategies from the 21st century Peace Corps volunteer” published in Volunteering and Communication: Studies from Multiple Contexts.

Ann Branton, professor and grants administrator, retired after 22 years with the University of Southern Mississippi at the end of June. Branton also served as head of cataloging and bibliographic services for University Libraries.

Caleb Faulkner, an incoming freshman chemistry and biochemistry major at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the American Chemical Society (ACS) Project SEED program. This is the first SEED scholarship awarded to a Southern Miss student.

Dr. Heidi Lyn, assistant professor of psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, co-authored a paper recently published by the journal Frontiers in Psychology showing the comparison of communication by baby apes and humans, which implicates the theory of how language evolved in humans.

Dr. Louis Kyriakoudes, associate professor of history and director of the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage at The University of Southern Mississippi, recently presented at the 8th World Conference of Science Journalists. The conference is being held June 24-28 in Helsinki, Finland.

Never one to shy away from the Southern Miss spotlight, Dr. Dave Davies, dean of the Honors College, performed his rendition of the “Gangnam Style” dance on Friday, June 21 in support of the University’s annual faculty/staff giving campaign.

Pauly Receives Department Award for Outstanding Service

LONG BEACH, Miss. – Dr. Bob Pauly, associate dean for the College of Arts and Letters and associate professor of international development at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, received the 2012-2013 Department of Political Science, International Development and International Affairs’ Award for Outstanding Service.

Sharon King, administrative assistant in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was named recipient of the Staff Council Service Award June 4 during the organization’s annual recognition luncheon.

The last time Annelise Moreau saw University of Southern Mississippi police officer Jared Pierce, he was coming to her aid after the Hattiesburg campus was struck by an F-4 tornado Feb. 10. 

 

This past Tuesday, under clearer skies, Moreau returned to Hattiesburg to help the university honor Pierce for his service on that fateful day. During the university’s annual Staff Council recognition and awards luncheon, Pierce and fellow officer Jason Powell received the Life Saving Award and Medal of Valor, respectively.

The Office of Communications at The University of Southern Mississippi captured 11 awards – including a Grand Award for Print Media -- during the 2013 College Public Relations Association of Mississippi (CPRAM) Conference held May 20-21 in Gulfport, Miss.

Sarah Case-Price began her affiliation with The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at The University of Southern Mississippi more than a dozen years ago as a student worker. On July 1, she will take over the reins as director.

Longtime higher education administrator Dr. Douglas Vinzant has been named the new Vice President for Finance and Administration at The University of Southern Mississippi. Pending IHL Board approval, Vinzant will begin his duties on June 17.

Chad R. Miller, University of Southern Mississippi assistant professor of Economic Development, was voted chair-elect of the American Society for Public Administration's (ASPA) Transportation Policy & Administration section. Miller was elected at the recent national ASPA conference in New Orleans.

The Department of Nutrition and Food Systems at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its first Alumni Group Dinner on Wednesday, April 24 at Lake Terrace Convention Center. 

The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation has announced Dr. Shannon Fleming as its next Executive Director, effective June 3. In this role, Fleming will serve as the chief staff executive for the USM Foundation, in addition to serving as the director of development for the University, and will be responsible for the Foundation’s strategic leadership, attainment of goals and objectives, coordination of fundraising activities and board management.

Each year, The University of Southern Mississippi hosts its Founders Day Ceremony in conjunction with the founding of the University on March 30, 1910.  During this ceremony, faculty, staff and students are recognized for their accomplishments and awards are presented to deserving recipients.

Exemplifying the excellence demonstrated in the College, several college faculty, staff and students that were recognized during this year's ceremony included:

U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) offered a special welcome to new University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney D. Bennett today at the senator’s office in Washington, D.C. Cochran congratulated Bennett on his selection to lead Southern Miss and welcomed the president’s vision for improving and expanding the university’s educational outreach.

Dr. Ray G Newman, chair of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Community Health Sciences, has received the Founders Medal of Honor Award for continued hard work and dedication to the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Ladell Kraft, speech language pathologist and Sarah Case-Price, speech language pathologist and assistant director, of The Children’s Center for Communication and Development of The University of Southern Mississippi were selected as presenters at the Mississippi Speech and Hearing Association Annual Continuing Education Conference (MSHA) in Jackson on March 25- 27.

Founders’ Day on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus April 1 was a celebration of the institution’s past, its future and the people who have made it what it is today.

 

It was also the first day of the presidency of Dr. Rodney Bennett, the University’s 10th executive officer.

University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett began his first day (April 1) on the job speaking with members of local media and meeting with his executive cabinet this morning. Later he participated in the Founders’ Day activities as the university celebrated its 103rd anniversary.

 

“What a wonderful day to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students, faculty and staff and the founding of our university,” he said. “Today is also my first day and I cannot be more thrilled to make that statement. I look forward to a long tenure here.”

He’s enjoyed success and weathered storms - literal and figurative - in the last several months as interim president of his alma mater, The University of Southern Mississippi.

 

Now Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas will return to his roles as President Emeritus and professor of higher education as the University prepares for a new era of leadership under Dr. Rodney Bennett, who begins as president of the institution April 1.
