The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) will host a free Earth Day Celebration for the community from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at the lab, which is located at 703 East Beach Drive in Ocean Springs.    

The Live Oak Writing Project at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast is offering Camp Live Oak, which features a variety of weeklong summer youth camps for students in grades 3 through 8. Camp sessions, except during the week of July 4, are from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.

The sound of hammers and circular saws filled the air in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast students and employees participated in the Big Event, a university-wide community service project.

Whether getting a first-ever library card, learning new computer skills or planning a trip, the library is the place where an individual’s story begins.

There were some tense moments at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast’s second annual College Quiz Bowl, but the university’s Accounting Society emerged victorious over the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus Reflections Team.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus celebrated the university’s Centennial Year Founders’ Day with a reception honoring employees with a commemorative pin for their continuous service of 10 and 20 years.

The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will present “Finding Inner Peace,” a concert premiere featuring the newly commissioned work of Dr. Benjamin Harlan of New Orleans.

The Technology Learning Center (TLC) at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast invites beginner to advanced athletes to a free basketball clinic for adults and children with disabilities. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. – noon on Saturday, April 9 at the Herbert Wilson Recreation Center in Gulfport.

Dr. Susan M. Wilczynski, a national expert on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be the guest presenter for the Issues + Answers Lecture Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Fleming Education Center auditorium at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi will hold Founders’ Day activities marking the 101st anniversary of its legislative founding Wednesday, March 30 in Hattiesburg and on the Gulf Coast. Students, faculty and staff and community members are encouraged to attend.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, partnered with the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, is sponsoring "College Day" Saturday, April 2. Any college or university student with a current student identification card will be admitted to the Champions Tour tournament free of charge. Additionally, anyone wearing Southern Miss apparel on Saturday will receive free admission, a $15 value.

Teams from The University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will go head-to-head at the university’s College Quiz Bowl beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

More than 10 teams will compete throughout the day in 30-minute matches until the final two teams compete for the Golden Eagle trophy. The teams are comprised of three students and one faculty or staff member.

Local artists and crafts vendors have until Friday, April 15 to reserve a 10’ x 10’ space for $40 at the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach will be offering programs designed to provide instruction in management and leadership.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the lecture, “Putting 1970s 'Blaxploitation' Films in Historical Perspective,”and screen the 1972 film, Super Fly, on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Dr. Fujun Lai, associate professor of decision sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, co-authored an article, “Market Orientation, Ownership Type and E-Business Assimilation: Evidence from Chinese Firms,” which was named the top-rated article in Decision Science Journal for 2010.

Among 18 teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, a team of three University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast students were named winners of the 2011 Deloitte Consulting’s Hattiesburg Invitational Programming Competition held Feb. 19 at the Deloitte Hattiesburg Delivery Center.

The University of Southern MississippiGulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) will host an evening with award-winning nature photographer Tom Ulrich at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in GCRL’s Caylor Auditorium.

There’s a lot more to be learned than what is found in textbooks, as students from The University of Southern Mississippi discovered when taking part in Export University, which was held Feb. 23-24 on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Miss.
