A student and faculty members from The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast earned a top award and participated in three paper presentations, respectively, at the 50th annual Academy of Economics and Finance Conference in Mobile, Ala. Feb. 13 – 16.

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach will offer a Mississippi Real Estate Pre-Licensing course on Mondays and Tuesdays March 4 - April 23 from 6-10 p.m. at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, Miss.

The Katrina Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host a premiere featuring the exhibit, “Psalm for Broken Bones: A Compendium” Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. on the third floor of the library on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

In honor of Black History Month, The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library will feature a special presentation by Jacqueline Dace, project director for the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum which is scheduled to open in Jackson in 2017. The presentation will be held Monday, Feb. 25 from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Hardy Hall Dining Room on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Children and visitors of the INFINITY Science Center in Hancock County will benefit greatly from a new agreement between the science center and The University of Southern Mississippi.

 

On Friday, Feb. 15, a memorandum of understanding was signed by Dr. Gordon Cannon, vice provost for research at Southern Miss, and George Schloegel, chairman of INFINITY, partnering both institutions to allow for greater educational opportunities.

Board members of INFINITY Science Center and representatives of the University of Southern Mississippi will be signing a memorandum of understanding on Friday, February 15th, at 1 pm beginning a unique educational partnership.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast College of Nursing will co-host a blood drive with Mississippi Blood Services Tuesday, Feb.19 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the reception area of the Fleming Education Center at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach.

Dr. Robert J. Pauly, associate professor of international policy and development at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been appointed to a two-year term as associate dean for the Gulf Coast operations of the College of Arts and Letters.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Film Department will present a free screening and filmmakers’ discussion of the film, “Girl Model,” Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:45 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Thanks in part to a donation of approximately $10,000 worth of equipment from the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Marine Education Center (MEC), Bel-Aire Elementary School in Gulfport is opening the only elementary science laboratory of its kind in the Harrison County School District.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries will host a book presentation with Joyce Shaw, coauthor of “Images of America – Ocean Springs,” on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 3 – 5 p.m. in Room 204 of the Gulf Park campus Library in Long Beach.

The College of Arts and Letters at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the first Eagles Nest Poetry Reading of the spring semester Monday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 204 of the Gulf Park campus library in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs will host an evening with award-winning nature photographer Tom Ulrich at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in GCRL’s Caylor Auditorium.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) is seeking volunteers to participate in research related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

SimMan, a fully computer-operated total body simulator used by University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast nursing faculty to bring more realism into replicated clinical settings for their students, was among the first to call the new 10,000 square foot Nursing Building on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach home.

Environmental disasters, both manmade and natural, have prompted the need for improved, comprehensive understanding of the waters and resources of the Gulf of Mexico.

 

To that end, The University of Southern Mississippi has taken the lead role in formation of the new Center for Gulf Studies (CGS). The center represents a partnership between Southern Miss and the state’s other research universities – Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and Jackson State University.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries will host a reception Thursday, Jan. 17, from 4 – 6 p.m. for the art exhibit of the husband-and-wife team of John and Tricia McDonald. The exhibit will be on display at the library on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach through Feb. 28.

Local artists and crafts vendors are invited to be part of the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, March 30, at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

University of Southern Mississippi Provost Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has announced that David Sliman will become the University’s Chief Information Officer, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

It’s been the sage advice of many, but when Rick Cleveland’s father told him to follow his passion, he took it to heart.

 

Cleveland, executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and a longtime sports reporter and columnist, shared that simple message as he gave the commencement address Friday, Dec. 14 at his alma mater, The University of Southern Mississippi.

The University of Southern Mississippi plans to restore its masters of business administration program on the Hattiesburg campus for the fall 2013 semester.

 

The program was shifted from the Hattiesburg campus to the Gulf Coast-only format in fall 2011 as part of budget cuts within the Southern Miss College of Business in 2010.

Dr. Shahdad Naghshpour, professor of International Development at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast has published two new books by Business Expert Press.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast awarded three scholarships at the Community College of the Air Force Fall 2012 graduation ceremony held Dec. 5 at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host spring 2013 orientation and registration Wednesday, Jan. 9 in the Fleming Education Center on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Orientation for new undergraduate students will be 1 - 3 p.m. Registration and advisement for all new and returning students will be held from 2 – 6 p.m.
