Hannah Roberts, the reigning Miss University of Southern Mississippi, took time out of her hectic schedule to donate approximately 1,000 books to the Fieldhouse for the Homeless on Tuesday, May 19 as part of her “Pages of Love” program.

The Southern Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) concluded its series of educational high school events and competitions on Friday, May 1, by hosting its 8th annual SEP State Business Plan Competition on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi graduate Kelvin Barber will soon trade his life as a Hattiesburg college student for a new one as a system engineer with Cerner Corporation in Kansas City, Mo.

 

Barber, a Natchez, Miss., native and Information Technology major at Southern Miss, will be working with Linux to update systems and software used in hospitals.

Natalya Ortolano and Meredith Barefield, biological science majors at The University of Southern Mississippi earned special recognition during the University’s Undergraduate Symposium on Research and Creative Activity.

Alanna Buckley and Ashley Moffett, graduate students at The University of Southern Mississippi, recently completed extensive training through the Institute for Disability Studies’ Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program.

The Office of Student Activities at The University of Southern Mississippi recently recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its 192 student organizations at the Student Organization Awards and Recognition ceremony. More than 120 nominations were collected, and a student affairs review committee determined the winners.

Four University of Southern Mississippi students have been awarded prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, marking the first time the University has produced this many winners in a single year.

 

Laken Kendrick, of Hattiesburg, Miss.; Abagail Williams, of Independence, Mo.; Dexter Dean of Clinton, Ala.; and Cassandra Reese, of San Diego, Calif., were granted the fellowships from a pool of 16,500 applicants. No other Mississippi college or university matched Southern Miss in NSF Fellowship winners for 2015.

Erica Estes, a graduate student pursing a master’s degree in sports management at The University of Southern Mississippi, was elected as the National Student Leader for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation. She also serves as graduate assistant for facilities and fitness in the recreational sports department.

University of Southern Mississippi student Bethany Cuevas of Long Beach won the title of Miss Magnolia earlier this spring in Corinth, Miss. With her title, Cuevas, an elementary education major at the university’s Gulf Park campus, will have the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss Mississippi this summer in Vicksburg.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Science and Technology recently recognized outstanding students at the Annual College of Science and Technology Awards Banquet.

The College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi celebrated its distinguished faculty members and students during an annual Honors Banquet held Thursday, April 16th at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

In honor of Earth Day, Miss University of Southern Mississippi, Hannah Roberts visited Oak Grove Primary School in Lamar County on Wednesday, April 22, to conduct science experiments and read from the book “It’s Earth Day (Little Critter)”.

Several South Mississippi students showcased their entrepreneurial ideas during The Southern Entrepreneurship Program’s 8th annual series of regional high school business plan competitions held Tuesday, March 24, in Long Beach, Miss.

Hundreds of students from The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses provided volunteer services as part of the 6th Annual Big Event on Saturday, March 21.

 

The students fanned out across various sites in Hattiesburg and along the Gulf Coast to assist with painting, landscaping, cleaning, organizing and related services.

William Faulkner said, “To understand the world, first you must understand a place like Mississippi.” Taking a cue from one of the Magnolia State’s favorite sons, an English professor at The University of Southern Mississippi took students from her graduate seminar class on a literary field trip last fall.

Tanner Shaw, a senior finance major at The University of Southern Mississippi, was awarded the prestigious Orrin W. Swayze Scholarship by the Mississippi Young Bankers Association during the group’s annual conference held earlier this month at Marriott’s Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Ala.

The University of Southern Mississippi has selected 17 students earning their degrees from the Gulf Park campus for the 2014-2015 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Katrina Knauer, a doctoral student in the polymer science program at The University of Southern Mississippi, took home a third-place award in the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools Regional Three Minute Thesis® (3MT®) competition held earlier this month in New Orleans.

After attending the 20th Annual Summit on Environmental Law and Policy at Tulane University Law School last week, Brenna Landis and Marla Cooper, University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus students, both believe they were given a more in-depth look at sustainability which can be shared with the student organization, EcoEagles.

The Student Printz, the student run newspaper at The University of Southern Mississippi, took home a number of Best of the South awards at the Southeast Journalism Conference (SEJC) 2015.

Entrepreneurship students from the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi took second-place honors during the Alley Scholars Leadership Summit and Shark Tank competition held Feb. 28 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast chapter of the American Advertising Federation of the recently held its annual awards competition, the 2015 ADDYS, and several University of Southern Mississippi students brought home design honors. Hosted at the Imperial Palace in Biloxi, the American Advertising Awards competition recognizes and rewards excellence in advertising.

University of Southern Mississippi students Alisha DeFatta and Kayla Scharfenstein were chosen to attend the Beta Gamma Sigma Student Leadership Forum held Feb. 5-8 in San Diego, Calif. The forum provides a hands-on learning experiences for business students across the country to improve their leadership skills.

A childhood marked by numerous visits to doctors’ offices helped Miss University of Southern Mississippi Hannah Roberts develop a passion for two life-changing pursuits – reading and medicine.

 

Today, the Southern Miss senior from Mount Olive, Miss., is actively engaged in both arenas, having been accepted into the University of Mississippi School of Medicine while continuing to oversee a book donation project that has grown beyond her grandest expectations.
