University of Southern Mississippi English and theatre students will spend four days learning the ropes from an established American playwright as part of the 2011 Blaine Quarnstrom Playwrights’ Series Jan. 27-30.

Vicki Killingsworth, a retired staff member of the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of Southern Mississippi was recognized with the 2010 Leadership in Advocacy Award by the Association of University Centers on Disability at its annual conference award gala in Washington, D.C.

Much to his amazement, University of Southern Mississippi professor Derek Patton discovered that even the longest of shots can find the intended bulls-eye where higher education is concerned.

 

Patton, 33, assistant professor in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials, learned recently that he had been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER grant designed to recognize outstanding work by junior faculty across the country.

Cynthia Render-Leach, human resources manager at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, recently received the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification through the Human Resources Certification Institute.

With the PHR certification, Render-Leach has met the high standards of education, experience and demonstrated knowledge established by the institute. To earn the PHR certification, professionals are required to meet specific eligibility requirements and pass a comprehensive written examination.

A professor considered a technology education pioneer and an Honors College student with a 4.0 grade point average are The University of Southern Mississippi’s recipients of this year’s Higher Education Appreciation Day, Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) award.

University of Southern Mississippi visiting assistant professor and designer Kyle White was recently accepted into the prestigious Society of Illustrators’ annual exhibition and publication for his work “Good Game.”

 

White submitted his work to the Illustrators 53 competition, which is the premier showcase for illustrators and animators worldwide held by the Society of Illustrators. “Good Game” will also be featured in the Illustrators 53 annual publication America’s Original Annual of Illustration, in addition to being exhibited at The Museum of American Illustration in New York City Jan. 5 – March 27.

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders loves her hometown of Hattiesburg. On Tuesday, Hattiesburg said: the feeling is mutual.

Saunders was named the 32nd recipient of The Hub Award, which honors outstanding contributions to the community, commitment to excellence and dedication to public service, during a recognition dinner at the Hattiesburg Country Club.

James Wilcox and David Bell, both representatives of the Southern Miss Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Education (CEEE), had an opportunity to learn more about business development and job growth as part of a regional conference Oct. 26-27 in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Thomas Payne, associate professor of criminal justice at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, was recently inducted into the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) Alumni Hall of Fame at a ceremony on the college’s Perkinston campus.
