One of the hardest things for college graduates can be translating their education into a job in the real world, but thanks to a workshop sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS), some Southern Miss doctoral students have a leg up on their competition.

A University of Southern Mississippi alumnus serving as deputy commander for the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 47^th Civil Support Team (CST) returned to his alma mater this week, where the unit conducted special training exercises on its Hattiesburg campus.

Major Ronald Green of Jackson, who graduated from the university with undergraduate degrees in accounting and biological sciences in 1997 and 2000, respectively, joined his team as they conducted special training exercises at Wilber (Panhellenic) Hall.

The Southern Miss football program, in conjunction with Forrest General Hospital, is putting on a Football 101: Chalk Talk for Women Clinic, Thursday, July 28, from 6-9 p.m., in the Touchdown Terrace of Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.

Dong-Young LEE has an extra spring in his step, and for good reason. A visiting security scholar from South Korea at The University of Southern Mississippi's National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS⁴), Young is celebrating the news that Pyeongchang, South Korea was chosen as the site of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Dane Reiter, former manager of The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association’s constituent relations, is the Association’s new associate director for internal operations. The Petal native and Southern Miss alum will oversee accounting, database management, human resources and office management functions of the Association.

Melissa Morrow enjoyed her experience so much in the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s Summer Field Program that she stayed for a second term.

“There’s a difference between learning something from a book and learning something in the field,” said Morrow, a senior majoring in marine biology at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. “It’s easy to memorize information from a book but that doesn’t half-way compare to working with the specimen itself. There’s also a thrill factor of being in the field.”
