He hasn’t faced the challenges getting where he’s going that Neal Page and Dell Griffith encountered in the 1987 comedy flick “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” starring Steve Martin and the late John Candy. But James Bueno Da Silva’s quest to travel to every University of Southern Mississippi away football game this season hasn’t come easy.

A Southern Miss sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Da Silva is determined to find a way to support the Golden Eagles either in person at M.M. Roberts Stadium or at the unfriendly home confines of their opponents - even if it means a 19-hour road trip to El Paso, Texas.

A new helmet produced by the sporting goods company Rawlings – using technology developed in the laboratories of The University of Southern Mississippi School of Polymers and High Performance Materials – is designed to minimize the impact of collisions on the gridiron.

The Rawlings Neuro Responsive Gear (NRG) helmet includes dual protection inside the helmet combining a layer of foam reinforced by pneumatic cushioning made of pressurized “air bladders” that takes over and absorbs the energy from high-velocity contact, protecting the athlete.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music has partnered with the Kawai Piano Company to bring new pianos to music students at the university.

The Elite Performing Instrument Collection (EPIC) will provide brand new loaner pianos that will be purchased at a substantial discount as part of the program that aims to replace almost all of the pianos in the school with new ones over the next 10 years.
