HEALTHY CAMPUS IS A HARDY CAMPUS

Main Content

Health is Golden. That’s the message we’re trying to get across to students, faculty, and staff at Southern Miss with a campaign of the same name.

For students, college is a place to learn not only about academics but skills that will help them be successful in their future.  For faculty and staff, college is the place we come to work and spend most of our days fulfilling the goals of our University.

One thing we all have in common is that without our health, we are not able to perform to the best of our abilities at any of our tasks whether it’s school, work, family, or outside activities.  That is why educating and empowering individuals on our campus to adopt a healthy lifestyle is an important task.

The Health is Golden campaign aims to create a culture of wellness at USM by promoting healthy eating and exercise.  This effort will be supported through teaching healthy eating and exercise techniques while also increasing the opportunities to engage in healthy activities on campus.  A steering committee composed of faculty, staff and students from various departments help to plan and guide activities through this campaign.

We plan to provide education about nutrition and exercise through various methods including social media, educational sessions, and individual and group consultations with professionals in the field.  More opportunities to make healthy choices on our campus will be made by increasing the amount of healthy food options and fun physical activity events.  Lastly, we want to recognize students, faculty and staff who make an effort to live a healthy lifestyle and are good role models to others.

The overall goal is to educate and empower our campus community to live a healthy lifestyle.  To stay updated on activities with the Health is Golden campaign and to learn how you can start making healthier choices, follow us on twitter @GoldenHealthUSM , our facebook page Health is Golden and our website www.usm.edu/wellness.
