The University's acquisition of the unique Point Sur research vessel helps Southern Miss not only enhance the high-quality education and research opportunities we provide as the leading marine science institution in the state of Mississippi, but it will also provide valuable benefits to our community and associated marine economy.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience a significant milestone in the growth and development of The University of Southern Mississippi’s research program as the research vessel Point Sur made its way across the Panama Canal. As I traveled to the country of Panama, entered the waters of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and explored the most recent addition to USM’s fleet, I was struck by the impact this vessel will have on our marine science research initiatives.

As President of The University of Southern Mississippi, I am deeply troubled that USM’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been called into question. I am aware of the historical tension surrounding access to higher education in the coastal community, and I respect each community member who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the coast is not marginalized or overlooked but is instead recognized as a critical region that deserves access to quality educational opportunities.

New campaign shines spotlight on health of Southern Miss community.

Health is Golden. That’s the message we’re trying to get across to students, faculty, and staff at Southern Miss with a campaign of the same name.

For students, college is a place to learn not only about academics but skills that will help them be successful in their future.  For faculty and staff, college is the place we come to work and spend most of our days fulfilling the goals of our University.
