The highly anticipated University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s production of Showbiz Showstoppers has announced a few surprise guests set to join the cast during its performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

 

Southern Miss’ men’s head basketball coach, Donnie Tyndall, and former Miss Mississippi, Chalie Ray, are scheduled to kick up their heels in the Broadway showcase production.

The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will perform the concert, “A Lenten Passion Journey,” Friday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach and on Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Biloxi.

A talented cast of students, alumni and community members are already in rehearsals for the April 11 performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Just over two months ago, the Hattiesburg area was devastated by a deadly F-4 tornado. The School of Music at Southern Miss faced considerable losses but experienced an overwhelming outpouring from the community and the world.

On Tuesday, April 16, the Southern Miss Trombone Choir will demonstrate the School of Music’s appreciation with a free performance at Bennett Auditorium. The concert, set for 7:30 p.m., will feature a premiere work by alumnus Charles Ingram.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Now in its 93rd season, the Symphony Orchestra has flourished under Dean’s direction, gaining an international reputation that enhances not only the university, but also the state and region.

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music has announced that the upcoming production of “Sweeney Todd” will take place at the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Hattiesburg.

 

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music has announced that the upcoming production of “Sweeney Todd” will take place at the historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Hattiesburg.

New performance dates are March 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. Because of the venue and date change, patrons who have already purchased tickets may use those tickets for the Thursday, March 7 performance. All tickets will become general admission. Proceeds from the event will benefit the recovery effort for the School of Music from the Feb. 10 tornado.

After the trials of the past week and the long journey to recovery ahead, The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi will proudly resume performances with the Award-winning Arabesque Winds in a free concert on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Connoisseur Series. With performance spaces at Southern Miss in ruins, First Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg has offered its sanctuary to aid in the recovery.

Martin Luther once said, “Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”

The School of Music at Southern Miss welcomes alumna mezzo-soprano Hope Fairchild Thacker back to campus for a solo recital on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The program features selections by Wolf, Poulenc, Montsalvatge and Menotti. Also on the program are American art songs by Larsen, Bolcom, Heggie and Moore. The recital is free and open to the public.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries will host a reception Thursday, Jan. 17, from 4 – 6 p.m. for the art exhibit of the husband-and-wife team of John and Tricia McDonald. The exhibit will be on display at the library on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach through Feb. 28.

This holiday season, The University of Southern Mississippi’s top jazz performers will take their popular Jingle Bell Jazz concert on the road. And their first stop will be to deck the halls of the Thirsty Hippo in downtown Hattiesburg on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

This holiday season, The University of Southern Mississippi’s top jazz performers will take their popular Jingle Bell Jazz concert on the road. And their first stop will be to deck the halls of the Thirsty Hippo in downtown Hattiesburg on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. 

This festive evening also celebrates their holiday trip to perform at the Jazz Education Network Conference in Atlanta in January. There is a $5 cover donation to help defray the costs of travel to this prestigious conference and other donations are appreciated.

Nothing conveys the holiday spirit more than the festive “Lighting the Way for the Holidays” and “Songfest” events held annually at The University of Southern Mississippi. The public is invited to attend this year’s free festivities, set for Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Hattiesburg campus.

 

Activities for the 6th Annual “Lighting the Way” program begin at 5 p.m. with performances set to commence at 5:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA) at Southern Miss. The 61st Annual Chi Omega Songfest will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.

The film program at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast presents "Smokin' Fish," with director and producer Luke Griswold-Tergis as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Associate professor Alexander Russakovsky, cello, and assistant professor Hsiaopei Lee, viola, are each featured in solo concertos with Maestro Jay Dean taking the podium to conduct Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony.

“After years of hearing about the wonderful programs here at Southern Miss, I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful community of musicians,” said Rand. “Everyone has been so welcoming and the students have been working so hard to continue the caliber of performance for which the wind ensemble is known.”

Lights. Camera. Action. That’s just what Southern Miss alumnus Jonathan Brannan heard when he joined the cast of the new Universal Studios motion picture, “Pitch Perfect.”

 

Brannan, a 2012 music education graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, auditioned for and was cast in the film over a year ago. Part of a talent agency based in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Brannan auditioned for a lot of projects, but the jobs were few and far between.

As the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale prepares for a new season of performances along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, several members reflect on the chorale’s beginning nearly two decades earlier.

Jim and Diane Miller, both retired professors from The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, have been fans of the civic chorale since it first began at the University in 1994. Although they did not start singing with the chorale during its first year, they did attend the first performance led by former director Joanne Edwards.

To celebrate the refreshed hall, The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music plans a show on an epic scale and a first for Hattiesburg – Stephen Sondheim’s chilling, Tony Award–winning musical, Sweeney Todd. Performances will be Feb. 28 – March 3, 2013.

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s a capella group, The Spirit of Southern (SOS), will host a memorial concert for Steffan Myers Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s a capella group, The Spirit of Southern (SOS), will host a memorial concert for Steffan Myers Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

This event was created to honor Steffan, an SOS member who was killed in a car accident in 2010. The concert will include favorites from the SOS repertoire; a tribute reading of Myers’ life; student reflections; and recognition and appreciation of the Myers family.

WUSM Roots Radio 88.5, Keg and Barrel and JHM Graphics, will kick off the WUSM Spring Slumgullion Saturday, March 31, at HUBFEST in Downtown Hattiesburg, and continue during the entire month of April at The Keg and Barrel on Hardy Street.

The WUSM Spring Slumgullion is planned as part of Public Radio Music Month, and is aimed at raising awareness and funds for WUSM.
