Larry Fedora, the fourth-year head football coach at Southern Miss, likes the idea of working with blueprints.

If he wasn’t coaching football, Larry Fedora says he’d love to work as a builder. Many football prognosticators believe he’s done just that with the 2011 edition of the Golden Eagles, constructing a team that should vie for this year’s Conference USA title.

The head coach of the Southern Miss football team took a few moments recently to discuss the upcoming season.

A native New Yorker, Richard "Dick" Vogel has found a comfortable, rewarding home as Executive Director of the Southern Miss Eagle Club.

Richard "Dick" Vogel serves as Executive Director of the Eagle Club and Associate Director of Athletics at The University of Southern Mississippi. Vogel, who once commanded U.S. Army troops in Germany, took a few moments recently to reflect on his current responsibilities and outside interests in a question-and-answer format.

The Children's Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss welcomed the Lady Eagles basketball organization on Tuesday, Sept. 30 to celebrate the pair's annual play date.  For the fourth year the Lady Eagles have taken a morning off from practice and studies to reach out to the Center's children who are all under the age of six and have special needs.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced today that its Fall 2014 entering class is the most academically talented in the institution’s recorded history.

 

With a renewed focus on student recruitment, retention, progression and graduation, the University’s newest students have the highest grade point average of any entering class. In addition, retention and graduation rates have improved.

The highly anticipated University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s production of Showbiz Showstoppers has announced a few surprise guests set to join the cast during its performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

 

Southern Miss’ men’s head basketball coach, Donnie Tyndall, and former Miss Mississippi, Chalie Ray, are scheduled to kick up their heels in the Broadway showcase production.

The Mississippi Legislature honored former University of Southern Mississippi football star Ray Guy, who was recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with a plaque and resolution during a special ceremony held Tuesday, April 1 at the State Capitol in Jackson. Guy took a few moments to address the legislators and also posed for photos with members of the Legislature who are Southern Miss graduates. Guy serves as director of the University’s M-Club/Community Relations.

M.K. Turk, the winningest men’s basketball coach in the history of Southern Miss, passed away Friday morning. He was 71.

 

Turk spent 20 seasons as the head basketball coach at The University of Southern Mississippi and finished his career as the all-time winningest coach in school history with 301 Golden Eagle victories, one NIT championship, two NCAA appearances and six NIT appearances.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum recently obtained the V Corps (Fifth Corps) Army footballchampionship trophy from 1941. The trophy was won by the 38th Division "Cycloners" soldier football team, which competed at the football stadium ("The Rock") on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The team was undefeated against other soldier football teams from training camps in the Southeastern United States. All of the dates, opponents and scores are engraved on the trophy.

On Monday, Oct. 14, a select group of 17 Southern Miss junior and senior student-athletes participated in the first of four career-development workshops at the Duff Athletic Center, all of which will feature a former Southern Miss student-athlete.

On Sept. 25, the Lady Eagles' players, coaches and staff took the children under their wings to dribble, swing, slide, run, ride, build, and even paint, during the third annual Lady Eagles visit to The Children's Center.

Members of The University of Southern Mississippi football team took part in Go Gold Day during a visit to the DuBard School for Language Disorders on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Members of The University of Southern Mississippi football team took part in Go Gold Day during a visit to the DuBard School for Language Disorders on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Players and coaches interacted with the DuBard School students who collected autographs and other memorabilia. The annual visit also included a tour of the facility and explanation of the school’s history by DuBard staffers.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles open the 2013 football season at home on Saturday, Aug. 31 against Texas State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett announced today that Gen. Jeff Hammond has accepted a position at the university as Special Assistant to the President for Military and Veterans Student Affairs. Hammond, a Southern Miss alumnus and retired two-star Army general, will begin work in his new role on Aug. 1.

Hammond, a Southern Miss alumnus and retired two-star Army general, will begin work in his new role on Aug. 1.

Hammond returned to work at his alma mater in 2010 as senior associate athletics director and most recently served as athletics director for one year, a term that ended on June 30.

University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett announced today (July 18) that Bill McGillis would become the university’s next athletics director.

 

Bennett made the announcement at a gathering of hundreds of Southern Miss students, alumni, employees and fans at the university’s Trent Lott Center.

New University of Southern Mississippi Head Football Coach Todd Monken will visit Waynesboro on Tuesday, June 4, for the Southern Miss Alumni Association Southeast Central Mississippi Chapter’s annual meeting.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Waynesboro Wayne County Library located at 1103A Mississippi Drive. Cost to attend is $12 per person and includes a barbecue chicken or pork dinner. Door prizes will also be given away.
