Larry Fedora, the fourth-year head football coach at Southern Miss, likes the idea of working with blueprints.

If he wasn’t coaching football, Larry Fedora says he’d love to work as a builder. Many football prognosticators believe he’s done just that with the 2011 edition of the Golden Eagles, constructing a team that should vie for this year’s Conference USA title.

The head coach of the Southern Miss football team took a few moments recently to discuss the upcoming season.

A native New Yorker, Richard "Dick" Vogel has found a comfortable, rewarding home as Executive Director of the Southern Miss Eagle Club.

Richard "Dick" Vogel serves as Executive Director of the Eagle Club and Associate Director of Athletics at The University of Southern Mississippi. Vogel, who once commanded U.S. Army troops in Germany, took a few moments recently to reflect on his current responsibilities and outside interests in a question-and-answer format.

“We realize that sexual misconduct is a serious matter on university campuses nationwide,” said Paul Walters, director of the Office of Compliance and Ethics at Southern Miss. “It is incumbent upon us to pursue every means available to ameliorate the consequences of this unlawful and demeaning conduct.”

The tailgate will be held at the historic Ogletree House from 5 – 7 p.m. and attendees will have access to complimentary beer and wine courtesy of Albert & Associates Architects and Montague, Pittman & Varnado P.A., in addition to heavy hors d’oeuvres, fun and football.

Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Ray Guy joked that he knows “there is one street name I will never forget” after a roadway bearing his name was dedicated on Tuesday, July 28 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

 

Guy, a former first-team All-American punter at Southern Miss, watched with pride as University workers unveiled “Ray Guy Way” on a signpost fronting the Duff Athletic Center.

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi held its first-ever Risk Management for Interscholastic Athletics and After-School Activities course on May 11 in Dover, Delaware. The course focuses on developing prevention/mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery techniques at interscholastic athletic events, and for after-school activities.

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4), located at The University of Southern Mississippi, is launching a fundraising campaign supporting the new MBA with an Emphasis in Sport Security Management. NCS⁴ has recently partnered with the College of Business to develop the nation’s first graduate degree that focuses on sport security.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) at The University of Southern Mississippi are sponsoring a variety of canned food collection drives Nov. 7-14 as part of “Let’s SAAC Hunger” week.

 

Conference USA member institutions participate in the initiative through conference-wide community outreach.  SAAC and CCCE invite all student groups, faculty, staff, alumni and area residents to participate.

The 16th annual Shell Finish Line/Alumni Homecoming Golf Tournament will be held at Hattiesburg Country Club, the official country club of the Southern Miss Alumni Association, Friday, Nov. 7. The tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. in conjunction with The University of Southern Mississippi’s Homecoming festivities.

The Children's Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss welcomed the Lady Eagles basketball organization on Tuesday, Sept. 30 to celebrate the pair's annual play date.  For the fourth year the Lady Eagles have taken a morning off from practice and studies to reach out to the Center's children who are all under the age of six and have special needs.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced today that its Fall 2014 entering class is the most academically talented in the institution’s recorded history.

 

With a renewed focus on student recruitment, retention, progression and graduation, the University’s newest students have the highest grade point average of any entering class. In addition, retention and graduation rates have improved.

The highly anticipated University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s production of Showbiz Showstoppers has announced a few surprise guests set to join the cast during its performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

 

Southern Miss’ men’s head basketball coach, Donnie Tyndall, and former Miss Mississippi, Chalie Ray, are scheduled to kick up their heels in the Broadway showcase production.

The Mississippi Legislature honored former University of Southern Mississippi football star Ray Guy, who was recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with a plaque and resolution during a special ceremony held Tuesday, April 1 at the State Capitol in Jackson. Guy took a few moments to address the legislators and also posed for photos with members of the Legislature who are Southern Miss graduates. Guy serves as director of the University’s M-Club/Community Relations.

M.K. Turk, the winningest men’s basketball coach in the history of Southern Miss, passed away Friday morning. He was 71.

 

Turk spent 20 seasons as the head basketball coach at The University of Southern Mississippi and finished his career as the all-time winningest coach in school history with 301 Golden Eagle victories, one NIT championship, two NCAA appearances and six NIT appearances.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum recently obtained the V Corps (Fifth Corps) Army footballchampionship trophy from 1941. The trophy was won by the 38th Division "Cycloners" soldier football team, which competed at the football stadium ("The Rock") on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The team was undefeated against other soldier football teams from training camps in the Southeastern United States. All of the dates, opponents and scores are engraved on the trophy.

On Monday, Oct. 14, a select group of 17 Southern Miss junior and senior student-athletes participated in the first of four career-development workshops at the Duff Athletic Center, all of which will feature a former Southern Miss student-athlete.
