Dr. Rodney Bennett, incoming president at The University of Southern Mississippi, addresses a large group of students who turned out for a campus cleanup project on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The student-led project was coordinated in response to the EF-4 tornado that struck the Southern Miss campus and the Hattiesburg area on Sunday, Feb. 10.

Dr. Rodney Bennett was announced as the 10th president of The University of Southern Mississippi during a news conference on Thursday, Feb. 7 in Hattiesburg. Dr. Bennett currently serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Georgia.

Statistics show that a post-secondary degree does indeed matter in today's competitive marketplace.

If you were to ask a classroom of first grade students what career path they plan to choose, you will likely receive answers such as “fireman” or “astronaut,” probably based on the excitement of riding on a fire truck or a spaceship, or “teacher,” based on the example set each day by their own teacher.

However, as these students grow and mature, discover and develop their own talent and aptitude, and consider many other factors, including job availability and salary, these career aspirations often change.

The University of Southern Mississippi hosted the Hattiesburg Regional Health Fair 2012 at the Payne Center on Friday, July 27. The fair featured health screenings, vendor displays, dance classes and door prizes.

Vendors from across the Pine Belt peddled their goods during the inaugural Southern Miss Farmers' Market held Monday, May 7 on The University of Southern Mississippi campus.

 

The Farmers' Market is open from 3-6 p.m. every Monday on the lawn of the Baptist Student Union on Montague Boulevard. The market will be held through the last Monday of October. For more information contact Dr. Susan Bone at 601.266.5655.

An enthusiastic group of Southern Miss fans saw the men's basketball team off Tuesday for its opening-round game against Kansas State in the NCAA Basketball Team. The Golden Eagles meet the Wildcats at 11:40 a.m. Thursday in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Q: What is your hometown and educational background?

A: I am originally from Gideon, Missouri but consider Hattiesburg my hometown now. I have a BS degree from Southern Miss in Social and Rehabilitation Services and a MS from Southern Miss in Counseling Psychology.

Career Services at The University of Southern Mississippi sponsored the Spring 2012 Career Fair on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at the Thad Cochran Center. More than 65 employer booths were crammed with students seeking employment information.

On Feb. 1, 2012, students at The Children’s Center for Communication and Development at USM enjoyed a visit from the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Neighborhood Enhancement Team (N.E.T.).  They learned about police work and were given the opportunity to wear handcuffs, police hats and badges.  They especially enjoyed turning on the siren and seeing the flashing lights on the police car.

Longtime artist and Southern Miss adjunct professor Terence Netter was on hand Thursday, Oct. 6 for the unveiling of his "9/11 Series" at the Cook Library Art Gallery. The series, which features six original paintings by Netter, will be displayed through November 6.
