The fifth annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes,” designed to raise awareness of sexual assault and funds to support the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention, will be held Thursday, April 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the Payne Center Sports Field on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.

Just over two months ago, the Hattiesburg area was devastated by a deadly F-4 tornado. The School of Music at Southern Miss faced considerable losses but experienced an overwhelming outpouring from the community and the world.

On Tuesday, April 16, the Southern Miss Trombone Choir will demonstrate the School of Music’s appreciation with a free performance at Bennett Auditorium. The concert, set for 7:30 p.m., will feature a premiere work by alumnus Charles Ingram.

A Hattiesburg resident who played a key role in the civil rights movement in Mississippi will be honored by the Committee on Services and Resources for Women (CSRW) Thursday, March 28 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The CSRW’s Research Award will be named after Peggy Jean Connor at the organization’s luncheon from 12:15 -1 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, room 216. The event is part of the university’s recognition of Women’s History Month, and will include presentation of the CSRW grant awards and the Kathanne W. Greene Essay Awards.

One of the most anticipated events celebrating children’s literature, the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival at The University of Southern Mississippi, will be held April 10-12 at the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus. 

Highlights of this year’s 46^th edition of the festival will include awarding of the 2013 Southern Miss Medallion to recipient Jon Scieszka and a musical performance by Grammy-nominated folk-rock children’s music group Trout Fishing in America that will be open to the public.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Libraries will host a reception Thursday, Jan. 17, from 4 – 6 p.m. for the art exhibit of the husband-and-wife team of John and Tricia McDonald. The exhibit will be on display at the library on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach through Feb. 28.

Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus will present “Ex Libris” Booth Exhibition: From Our Library to Yours on Tuesday, Dec. 4 from 3 – 5:30 p.m. at the Gulf Park campus library.

The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Catherine Rand, presents its second concert of the Fall 2012 semester on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in Bennett Auditorium. The concert, set for 7:30 p.m., will feature two guest conductors and also a premier work for the wind ensemble. 

The film program at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast presents "Smokin' Fish," with director and producer Luke Griswold-Tergis as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. The screening will be held at Fleming Education Center Auditorium, Gulf Park campus in Long Beach on Friday, Nov. 16 at 6:45 p.m.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Lake Thoreau Environmental Center will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, Oct. 27 with the Rattler Ramble 5K and Runners High Kids Fun Run beginning with check-in at 9 a.m. at the center. The race will start at 10 a.m. and refreshments and music will follow the event at the center.

Registration fees are $15 for students and $25 general. The Fun Run is free. Age group categories for male and female include 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+. Prizes will be awarded to overall category winners and for best costume.

Lights. Camera. Action. That’s just what Southern Miss alumnus Jonathan Brannan heard when he joined the cast of the new Universal Studios motion picture, “Pitch Perfect.”

Brannan, a 2012 music education graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, auditioned for and was cast in the film over a year ago. Part of a talent agency based in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Brannan auditioned for a lot of projects, but the jobs were few and far between.  

As the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale prepares for a new season of performances along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, several members reflect on the chorale’s beginning nearly two decades earlier.

Jim and Diane Miller, both retired professors from The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, have been fans of the civic chorale since it first began at the University in 1994. Although they did not start singing with the chorale during its first year, they did attend the first performance led by former director Joanne Edwards.
