The University of Southern Mississippi will host renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi, for two performances on Sunday, Nov. 23 and Monday, Nov. 24 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi will host renowned trombonist Joseph Alessi, for two performances on Sunday, Nov. 23 and Monday, Nov. 24 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Sunday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes accompaniment by the Trombones @ Southern Miss. The following day, Alessi will host a master class beginning at 10 a.m. in Marsh Auditorium until noon. The featured performance occurs that night with the Wind Ensemble. All events are free and open to the public.

The Hattiesburg community will be treated to a pair of concerts next week by two University of Southern Mississippi bands. Both events will take place at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

On Monday, Nov. 17, the Symphonic Winds will perform their second concert of the Fall 2014 season at 8 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Mohamad Shumann. On Thursday, Nov. 20, the Southern Miss Concert Band presents its concert at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Jamie Standland.

Dr. John Wooton, director of percussion studies at The University of Southern Mississippi, and pianist Dr. Sam Bruton, professor of philosophy and religion at Southern Miss, present their project “Caribbean Collective” in concert Sunday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Thirsty Hippo in downtown Hattiesburg.

When the hit Broadway musical “Mary Poppins” takes flight, she will be supported by some of the best hoofers in the area. The University of Southern Mississippi’s Dixie Darlings will bring their exceptional dance skills to the grand reopening of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center Auditorium, Feb. 26 – March 1, 2015.  

 

The Southern Miss School of Music, in partnership with Forrest General Hospital, is pleased to present this exceptional cast and welcome the Dixie Darlings to the Poppins family. Tickets for the production go on sale Tuesday, Nov. 11.

The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present a concert entitled “Made in America” that will feature Natasha Trethewey, the current Mississippi Poet Laureate and former United States Poet Laureate on Thursday, Nov. 6 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Department of History at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach will present a lecture and book discussion by Dr. Kyle Longley on Monday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.

 

The Department of History at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach will present a lecture and book discussion by Dr. Kyle Longley on Monday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m.

Longley, author and professor of history at Arizona State University, will give a talk about his latest book “The Morenci Marines: A Tale of Small Town America and the Vietnam War.” A discussion will follow.

The 70th annual Miss University of Southern Mississippi Pageant will feature 14 students competing for the event title at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. General admission is $7 and $5 for students.

The event, hosted and produced by the Southern Miss Student Government Association, is a preliminary to the Miss Mississippi Pageant. Participants also compete for valuable scholarship funds.

The unique work of five internationally-known artists will be featured on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi as part of an outdoor sculpture exhibition that will run from September 2014 through February 2016.

The unique work of five internationally-known artists will be featured on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi as part of an outdoor sculpture exhibition that will run from September 2014 through February 2016.

The biennial exhibition will also include lectures from the featured artists as well as art walks for anyone wishing to learn more about the sculptures. Installation of the first sculpture, by artist Ray Katz, was completed on Monday, Aug. 25 behind the Liberal Arts Building.

Young women from all over the state of Mississippi have been on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus June 1-6 to participate as delegates in the 66th annual American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.

 

The program’s hands-on citizenship training provides upcoming high school seniors the opportunity to learn about politics on local, county and state levels by creating their own cities and campaigning for elected office in the state of “Magnolia.”

More than 250 young women from across the state will be on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus June 1-6 for the 66th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Magnolia Girls State. The weeklong program educates delegates about the mechanics of democracy through simulated political campaigns, legislative and judicial processes in the fictitious state of “Magnolia.”

A talented cast of students, alumni and community members are already in rehearsals for the April 11 performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The International Food Fair allows those in attendance to have an opportunity to sample cuisine from various countries prepared by the university’s international students. A cover charge of $2 will be collected at the door.

Since its release, “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War,” the autobiography of former U.S. Secretary of Defense and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Dr. Robert M. Gates, has been both a best-seller and the topic of intense conversations across the country. On Thursday, Feb. 6, the book will also be the focal point of Gates’s presentation at the Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg.

The Mu Gamma Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host the 8th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interracial and Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast Monday, Jan. 20 beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Thad Cochran Center Ballrooms on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi will hold two commencement ceremonies at Reed Green Coliseum on its Hattiesburg campus Friday, Dec. 13. Approximately 1,100 students are candidates for degrees this fall.

State Supreme Court Justice James W. Kitchens will speak to graduates at the 10 a.m. commencement, which will be followed by the 2:30 p.m. ceremony featuring a keynote address by State Supreme Court Justice Randy G. Pierce. Both are Southern Miss graduates.

The Trent Lott National Center at The University of Southern Mississippi, in partnership with the Stennis Institute at Mississippi State University, will host an inaugural workshop titled, “Basic Community Economic Development: Practical Tools for Elected Officials” on Wednesday, Dec. 11 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum recently obtained the V Corps (Fifth Corps) Army footballchampionship trophy from 1941. The trophy was won by the 38th Division "Cycloners" soldier football team, which competed at the football stadium ("The Rock") on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The team was undefeated against other soldier football teams from training camps in the Southeastern United States. All of the dates, opponents and scores are engraved on the trophy.
