Dr. Thomas Ollendick, a distinguished professor and renowned expert on childhood anxiety disorders, will be the featured speaker at The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology’s 2015 Hildman Colloquium. His presentation, titled "Phobic and Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Where to From Here?" is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 at 2 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballroom I.

The Student Government Association at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Golden Eagle Memorial Service Wednesday, April 22. The service begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, room 216 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The event honors students, faculty and staff who passed away during the 2014-15 academic year. For more information, contact Associate Dean of Students Wynde Fitts at 601.266.6028 or e-mail wynde.fitts@usm.edu.

The 2015 Petal - Southern Miss Powwow will be held in Petal at Willie Hinton Park with School Day Thursday, April 16 and the powwow activities April 17-19. The event is a celebration of Native American traditions. Music, social dance, arts and crafts are part of the schedule for the Powwow, which will also include food and novelty vendors.

The Powwow is hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Intertribal Society and the Center for American Indian Research and Studies, partnering with the Petal Chamber of Commerce and the city of Petal for the event.

In a follow-up to last season’s smash hit musical, Rent, The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will present the exhilarating rock musical Spring Awakening, adapted by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater from the original play by Frank Wedekind.

 

In a follow-up to last season’s smash hit musical, Rent, The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will present the exhilarating rock musical Spring Awakening, adapted by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater from the original play by Frank Wedekind.

Performance dates are April 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m. A pre-show talk will take place at 6:30 p.m. prior to the April 23 performance. All performances will take place in Tatum Theatre of the Southern Miss Theatre and Dance Building.

Grey will present "A Great War of Empire: Britain, the Ottomans and the Campaign in the Middle East, 1914-1918." The lecture will start at 6 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 102 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Since its founding nearly 30 years ago, the Zeta Chi chapter of Delta Tau Delta at The University of Southern Mississippi has raised approximately half a million dollars to fight Cystic Fibrosis. That tradition continues Saturday, March 28 when the fraternity hosts its annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Run for Breath 5K Run/Walk.

With their soulful blues sound, the sibling trio of Homemade Jamz Blues Band will showcase their unique musical talents at the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 4, at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the campus.

 

The Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival is free and open to the public offering a day of fun and music. In addition to local restaurants and food vendors offering a variety of cuisine, the festival will also feature arts and crafts vendors set up throughout the front lawn of the campus.

A reception will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

The 2015 conference theme, Faculty Practices for Engaging Learners, emphasizes both traditional and innovative methods that have shown potential to improve student learning outcomes.

Local artists and crafts vendors are invited to be part of the 6th Annual Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 4, at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Vendors with the application postmarked on or before March 1 will receive a $40 rate for the 10’ x 10’ space. Applications postmarked March 2 – 14 will be subject to an increased rate of $80 per space. There is a limit of two spaces per vendor.

An award-winning journalist who made civil rights history in higher education will be the guest speaker for the spring 2015 Armstrong-Branch Lecture at The University of Southern Mississippi.

 

Charlayne Hunter-Gault, one of two students to desegregate then all-white University of Georgia in 1961, will present “From Closed Doors to Open Roads: A Journalist’s Journey” Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Office of Multicultural Programs and Services will give students an opportunity to learn more about African American historyand culture in February through its Black History Month programs.

Valencia Walls, coordinator of the Office of Multicultural Programs, said African American history is important for all students to learn. “I hope that through the programs we offer, our students will gain a greater respect and understanding of African American history and the responsibility that comes along with it,” she said.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) will host an evening with award-winning nature photographer Tom Ulrich at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in GCRL’s Caylor Auditorium.

The wildlife photography presentation will feature Ulrich’s work from the past year, with a focus on the spring bird migration in south Texas, hummingbirds and rainforest birds in Ecuador, and Glacier National Park in detail.

In March, members of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland to participate in the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In order to help defray costs for attendees, the students themselves have organized a 5k run and one mile fun run dubbed the Screamin’ Eagle Dash.
