The University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles football team will square off with the Mississippi State University Bulldogs Saturday, Sept. 5 at 9:05 p.m. at M.M. Roberts Stadium – “The Rock” – in the season opener for both teams. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at The University of Southern Mississippi will feature 130 original works of art by award winning illustrator Tasha Tudor at an exhibit from October through December at Oddfellows Gallery in downtown Hattiesburg. These pieces are part of a traveling exhibit organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge, Mass.

An important milestone in the history of The University of Southern Mississippi will be observed Sept. 2-6 when the school marks the 50th anniversary of its desegregation.

Bearing the theme “Celebrating 50 Years of Progress: Desegregation of The University of Southern Mississippi,” the week’s programming will include a keynote speech by renowned author and journalist Soledad O’Brien Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band and the Dixie Darlings will kick off the 2015-16 season with Pride Preview. This free concert will be held Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. at Centennial Green on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus, and all are invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment.

Every year, Hattiesburg’s music lovers anxiously await the announcement of The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra season. Celebrating 96 years, the venerable organization is the state’s oldest orchestra and a leader in cultural offerings for the region.
 

Music Director Jay Dean notes: “Every symphonic concert this season features wind or brass soloists. Some of these performers will be students who come from different parts of the world, including Mississippi, while others are globally renowned celebrity artists."

A total of 10 sports facilities will be recognized for their achievements in security as part of the 2015 National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition July 6-9 in Orlando, Fla. More than 450 security professionals and 55 vendor exhibits are expected to attend the national conference.

The presentation of awards to these facilities will take place on the second day of the sixth annual conference, which is hosted by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. Thomas Ollendick, a distinguished professor and renowned expert on childhood anxiety disorders, will be the featured speaker at The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology’s 2015 Hildman Colloquium. His presentation, titled "Phobic and Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Where to From Here?" is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 at 2 p.m. on the Hattiesburg campus in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballroom I.

The Student Government Association at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Golden Eagle Memorial Service Wednesday, April 22. The service begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, room 216 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The 2015 Petal - Southern Miss Powwow will be held in Petal at Willie Hinton Park with School Day Thursday, April 16 and the powwow activities April 17-19. The event is a celebration of Native American traditions. Music, social dance, arts and crafts are part of the schedule for the Powwow, which will also include food and novelty vendors.

In a follow-up to last season’s smash hit musical, Rent, The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre will present the exhilarating rock musical Spring Awakening, adapted by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater from the original play by Frank Wedekind.

Performance dates are April 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 2 p.m. A pre-show talk will take place at 6:30 p.m. prior to the April 23 performance. All performances will take place in Tatum Theatre of the Southern Miss Theatre and Dance Building.

Since its founding nearly 30 years ago, the Zeta Chi chapter of Delta Tau Delta at The University of Southern Mississippi has raised approximately half a million dollars to fight Cystic Fibrosis. That tradition continues Saturday, March 28 when the fraternity hosts its annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Run for Breath 5K Run/Walk.

With their soulful blues sound, the sibling trio of Homemade Jamz Blues Band will showcase their unique musical talents at the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 4, at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the campus.

 

The Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival is free and open to the public offering a day of fun and music. In addition to local restaurants and food vendors offering a variety of cuisine, the festival will also feature arts and crafts vendors set up throughout the front lawn of the campus.

A reception will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

The 2015 conference theme, Faculty Practices for Engaging Learners, emphasizes both traditional and innovative methods that have shown potential to improve student learning outcomes.
