More than 250 young women from across the state will be on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus June 1-6 for the 66th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Magnolia Girls State. The weeklong program educates delegates about the mechanics of democracy through simulated political campaigns, legislative and judicial processes in the fictitious state of “Magnolia.”

The highly anticipated University of Southern Mississippi School of Music’s production of Showbiz Showstoppers has announced a few surprise guests set to join the cast during its performance on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

 

Southern Miss’ men’s head basketball coach, Donnie Tyndall, and former Miss Mississippi, Chalie Ray, are scheduled to kick up their heels in the Broadway showcase production.

The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will perform the concert, “A Lenten Passion Journey,” Friday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach and on Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Biloxi.

The School of Music at Southern Miss has released tickets for Showbiz Showstoppers, a one-night-only spectacular featuring show-stopping numbers from some of Broadway’s best musicals.

 

A talented cast of students, alumni and community members are already in rehearsals for the April 11 performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Grand Marshall is Robert St. John (right), Hattiesburg restaurateur, chef and author who began the Extra Table charity several years ago with a goal to “make sure that no child in Mississippi goes to bed hungry at night.” The King is Dr. Denis A. University of Southern Mississippi international students will showcase their homelands during the annual International Food Fair Thursday, April 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Baptist Student Center, located at 214 North 31st Ave. on the Hattiesburg campus.

The International Food Fair allows those in attendance to have an opportunity to sample cuisine from various countries prepared by the university’s international students. A cover charge of $2 will be collected at the door.

Since its release, “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War,” the autobiography of former U.S. Secretary of Defense and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Dr. Robert M. Gates, has been both a best-seller and the topic of intense conversations across the country. On Thursday, Feb. 6, the book will also be the focal point of Gates’s presentation at the Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg.

The Mu Gamma Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host the 8th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interracial and Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast Monday, Jan. 20 beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Thad Cochran Center Ballrooms on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi will hold two commencement ceremonies at Reed Green Coliseum on its Hattiesburg campus Friday, Dec. 13. Approximately 1,100 students are candidates for degrees this fall.

State Supreme Court Justice James W. Kitchens will speak to graduates at the 10 a.m. commencement, which will be followed by the 2:30 p.m. ceremony featuring a keynote address by State Supreme Court Justice Randy G. Pierce. Both are Southern Miss graduates.

The Trent Lott National Center at The University of Southern Mississippi, in partnership with the Stennis Institute at Mississippi State University, will host an inaugural workshop titled, “Basic Community Economic Development: Practical Tools for Elected Officials” on Wednesday, Dec. 11 on the Hattiesburg campus.

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum recently obtained the V Corps (Fifth Corps) Army footballchampionship trophy from 1941. The trophy was won by the 38th Division "Cycloners" soldier football team, which competed at the football stadium ("The Rock") on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The team was undefeated against other soldier football teams from training camps in the Southeastern United States. All of the dates, opponents and scores are engraved on the trophy.

The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association will induct seven of the university’s most dedicated and distinguished volunteers into its Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 25 as one of the highlights of the 2013 Homecoming celebration.

The School of Mass Communication and Journalism’s annual symposium, titled “A Legend Comes Home: Honoring Chuck Scarborough” will be held for the first time in conjunction with the university’s Homecoming activities.

Gov. Phil Bryant urged spring 2013 graduates of The University of Southern Mississippi to “have a sense of urgency” in seizing life’s opportunities, and not lie down in the face of adversity.

In his commencement address given at two ceremonies Friday at Reed Green Coliseum on the Hattiesburg campus, Bryant also asked them to reflect on their achievement and give thanks to family, friends and university faculty and staff for helping them secure their degrees. “Remember this day,” Bryant said. “You have accomplished a great thing.”

Just over two months ago, the Hattiesburg area was devastated by a deadly F-4 tornado. The School of Music at Southern Miss faced considerable losses but experienced an overwhelming outpouring from the community and the world.

On Tuesday, April 16, the Southern Miss Trombone Choir will demonstrate the School of Music’s appreciation with a free performance at Bennett Auditorium. The concert, set for 7:30 p.m., will feature a premiere work by alumnus Charles Ingram.
