Dr. Rodney Bennett, incoming president at The University of Southern Mississippi, addresses a large group of students who turned out for a campus cleanup project on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The student-led project was coordinated in response to the EF-4 tornado that struck the Southern Miss campus and the Hattiesburg area on Sunday, Feb. 10.

Dr. Lawrence Hosman, left, professor of communication studies at The Univesity of Southern Mississippi, receives a Certificate of Appreciation honoring his late wife, Dr. Susan Siltanen, from Ted Tibbett, center, and Chuck Singleterry of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3036. The VFW honored Dr. Siltanen for her nearly 30 years of service to the VFW Post 3036 as a judge for its student essay scholarship program.  Siltanen was a professor of communication studies and former dean of the Graduate School at Southern Miss. Members of the Southern Miss Graduate Student Senate will now serve the VFW as judges for the contest as a community service project.(University Communications photo by David Tisdale)

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 99, is sponsoring an information session titled “Getting into Graduate School” Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 4-6 p.m. at the Polymer Science Auditorium on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus, with a satellite link to the Southern Miss Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach.

For the first time, The University of Southern Mississippi’s Graduate School will offer a unique opportunity for students to showcase their thesis or dissertation work in a competitive format.

 

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition invites graduate students to describe the significance of his/her thesis or dissertation to a general audience in three minutes or less. Cash prizes will be awarded to the eight finalists – ranging from $250 for finalists to $1,000 for the Grand Champion.

Application and Beyond" Oct. 21 from 12:15 - 1 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Building, room 204 on the Hattiesburg campus.

University of Southern Mississippi graduate student Jeremy Noble used the Alumni Association’s “Leave a Legacy” program to create a lasting memory for himself and his new bride.

University of Southern Mississippi graduate student Jeremy Noble used the Alumni Association’s “Leave a Legacy” program to create a lasting memory for himself and his new bride.

It all started with a brick. Kellie Stonecypher’s parents of Saraland, Ala., bought her a brick as part of the “Leave a Legacy” program when she graduated from Southern Miss with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2010. However she had never had the opportunity to find it on campus.

The University of Southern Mississippi announced today that its Fall 2014 entering class is the most academically talented in the institution’s recorded history.

 

With a renewed focus on student recruitment, retention, progression and graduation, the University’s newest students have the highest grade point average of any entering class. In addition, retention and graduation rates have improved.

Dr. Karen S. Coats, a decorated scholar with nearly 25 years as an educator and administrator, has been named the new dean of the Graduate School at The University of Southern Mississippi. She will begin work in Hattiesburg on Aug. 1, pending IHL Board approval.

Dr. Karen S. Coats, a decorated scholar with nearly 25 years as an educator and administrator, has been named the new dean of the Graduate School at The University of Southern Mississippi. She will begin work in Hattiesburg on Aug. 1, pending IHL Board approval.

Coats, a native of Springfield, La., comes to Southern Miss from Mississippi State University in Starkville where she has spent the past three years as associate dean of the Graduate School. A professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, she has served as a member of the university’s faculty since 1990.

On Monday, Feb. 10, The University of Southern Mississippi marked a year since a destructive EF-4 tornado struck its Hattiesburg campus, damaging buildings and destroying trees, primarily at its front entrance next to Hardy Street.

University officials are pleased with progress to restore the campus and look forward to completing all work connected with recovery from the storm by the end of 2014.

The Provost’s Office is asking Southern Miss students and faculty to assist in the Fall 2012 Textbook Survey that is now available on SOAR. Faculty and students will find separate surveys, which must be completed before midnight on Friday, Nov. 16 to be included in the final results.

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha D. Saunders announced today that Vice President for Research Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has been named as the university’s next provost, pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The change is effective July 1.

Scott J. Moore, an investigative scientist in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Office of the Inspector General, delivered the annual Martha D. Saunders Keynote Address at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Graduate Student Research Symposium, held Friday, March 23 in the Thad Cochran Center.
