Dr. Rodney Bennett, incoming president at The University of Southern Mississippi, addresses a large group of students who turned out for a campus cleanup project on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The student-led project was coordinated in response to the EF-4 tornado that struck the Southern Miss campus and the Hattiesburg area on Sunday, Feb. 10.

In accordance with the Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation’s (CLTT) strategic plan, Thomas Schoemann has been selected as the center’s Operations Manager. Schoemann will assume his new position at The University of Southern Mississippi on May 20.

Geography students from The University of Southern Mississippi recently joined with the Asset Development Division of the Mississippi Development Authority to study downtown McComb’s opportunities for economic development.

University of Southern Mississippi President Rodney Bennett joined representatives of GE Aviation, along with local, state and federal officials Tuesday for the grand opening of the company’s new 344,000-square-foot composites manufacturing facility in Ellisville.

 

The plant, known as GE Ellisville Composites, is a $56 million company investment that will create 250 jobs. Previously, the Southern Miss School of Polymers and High Performance Materials collaborated with GE Aviation on technology and advanced material development for the company’s Batesville Composites Operation in Batesville, Miss.

On Tuesday, April 30 GE Aviation opens its new facility at the Howard Technology Park in Ellisville during an 11 a.m. ceremony that will include comments from Gov. Phil Bryant and GE Aviation President and CEO David Joyce. Several other dignitaries, including U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, are expected to attend.

To describe the race to acquire national scholarships in higher education as competitive is a little like saying Niagara Falls is wet.

 

Under the tireless guidance of National Scholarship Officer Robyn Curtis, the University of Southern Mississippi has emerged as a major player in these fierce competitions. And nothing exemplifies that success more than the current year which has produced two Goldwater Scholars; a Truman Scholar and two Fulbright Student Finalists.

The Department of Marine Science and Center for Gulf Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi has announced the inauguration of the “Denis and Jean Wiesenburg Distinguished Lecture in Ocean Science.”

The lecture series kicks off with a presentation by Dr. John O. Dabiri, professor of Aeronautics and Engineering at Caltech. Dabiri will deliver a lecture titled, “Do Swimming Animals Mix the Ocean?” at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22 at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center.

Dr. Stuart Rowan, a professor of macromolecular science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio will give the 11th annual Bayer Distinguished Lecture Thursday, April 25 at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The lecture series is sponsored by Bayer MaterialScience and hosted by the Southern Miss School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.

The Gulf Region Intelligent Transportation Society (GRITS) and the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) hosted the Spring 2013 Regional Workshop that focused on Weigh-in-Motion technology and Interagency Coordination. The workshop was sponsored by Temple, Inc. and Neel-Schaffer.

University of Southern Mississippi students Michael Sims of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Hannah Roberts of Mount Olive, Miss., have been awarded prestigious Goldwater Scholarships which recognize the nation’s next generation of top research scientists.

 

Sims is a junior majoring in polymer science and chemistry, while Roberts is a sophomore chemistry major. Southern Miss accounts for two of the four Goldwater Scholarships awarded this year to students in Mississippi.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast celebrated the completion of two new buildings with a ribbon cutting ceremony March 28 at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast celebrated the completion of two new buildings with a ribbon cutting ceremony March 28 at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Southern Miss administrators, faculty, staff and students, along with community leaders, took part in the ceremony to welcome the Science Building and Nursing Building to campus. Following the ceremony, an open house was held in the $10 million Science Building and $1.5 million Nursing Building.
