As a kickoff to the 2012 Southern Miss Campaign, the USM Foundation hosted a "Dancing with the Deans" dance competition on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the Thad Cochran Center.

Continuing a commitment to promote common goals between higher education and industry, The University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) invitedindustry professionals to its Industry Advisory Council (IAC) Summit Thursday at the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Dr. Barry Farmer, chief scientist of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, visited the University of Southern Mississippi campus recently discussing advanced materials and their application, including being enablers for new technology and possible limiters for performance. 

Farmer had breakfast with graduate students from the College of Science and Technology and held an afternoon lecture for faculty, staff, and students. 

Tara Burcham, coordinator of public relations in the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi, won two professional awards at the 2012 Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) awards banquet held recently in Columbus, Miss.

Burcham received a PRism award in the category Writing for Public Relations for the news release “USM Science and Mentoring Program Reaches Local High Schools.”  In the category of Images, Burcham also won a PRism award for the “USM Science Mentoring Photo.”   

University of Southern Mississippi Professor Charles L. McCormick was named a POLY Fellow at the 243^rd meeting of the American Chemical Society last month in San Diego Calif.

University of Southern Mississippi sophomore Tyler Brown, of Biloxi, Miss., has been awarded the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society’s Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship.

Brown, a chemistry and polymer science double major, is spending the spring semester studying at England’s University of Exeter.

University of Southern Mississippi President Martha D. Saunders announced today that Vice President for Research Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has been named as the university’s next provost, pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The change is effective July 1.

The list of career accolades continues to grow for University of Southern Mississippi polymer science researcher Dr. Robert Lochhead, who has been selected to receive the Chemical Pioneer Award by the American Institute of Chemists (AIC).

Tulio Sulbaran, MD Sarder, and Chad Miller of the Center for Logistics, Trade, and Transportation (CLTT) at The University of Southern Mississippi recently visited Panama to continue strengthening relationships with the Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá (UMIP) and representatives of the logistics and transportation industry in Panama.

Tulio Sulbaran, director of the Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) at The University of Southern Mississippi, attended the 2012 Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Research Needs Workshop. The workshop brought together transportation research stakeholders from government, universities and private industry to identify and discuss specific transportation needs in the state. 

Students who enjoy science and nature will want to participate in the hands-on experience provided by University of Southern Mississippi summer camps set for this summer.

Titled “Survivor: Young Naturalist Camp,” the camps are scheduled for June 24 – 29, 2012 (rising 8th – 12^th graders) and July 8 –13, 2012 (rising 4th – 7th graders). The summer program, which began in 2005, is sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences. 

The University of Southern Mississippi will offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention program this summer for children entering grades 1-6.

This exciting week of five fun-filled modules begins June 4 under the direction of Dr. Aimee K. Thomas, director of the Biological Sciences Learning Center at Southern Miss and taught by local top-notch educators.
