Dr. Rodney Bennett, incoming president at The University of Southern Mississippi, addresses a large group of students who turned out for a campus cleanup project on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The student-led project was coordinated in response to the EF-4 tornado that struck the Southern Miss campus and the Hattiesburg area on Sunday, Feb. 10.

University of Southern Mississippi Assistant Professor Philip Bates finds himself in elite company as the winner of the 2014 Paul K. Stumpf Award  -- presented biannually to exceptional scientists in plant lipid research.

University of Southern Mississippi Assistant Professor Philip Bates finds himself in elite company as the winner of the 2014 Paul K. Stumpf Award  -- presented biannually to exceptional scientists in plant lipid research.

Bates accepted the honor during the International Symposium on Plant Lipids (ISPL) held earlier this month in Guelph, Canada. As the Stumpf Award recipient, Bates was invited to present a lecture on his research.

As temperatures rise throughout the long, hot days of summer in South Mississippi, so too does the presence of mosquitoes. And with that pesky insect comes the threat of West Nile Virus.

 

The mosquito-transmitted disease has been on the upswing nationwide over the past several years. It is estimated that the virus has killed more than 1,500 people and infected more than 50,000 Americans in the last 15 years.
