Our ability and willingness to come together and talk through issues will build a solid foundation for the University and the coastal community to become a much more economically progressive area.

As President of The University of Southern Mississippi, I am deeply troubled that USM’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been called into question. I am aware of the historical tension surrounding access to higher education in the coastal community, and I respect each community member who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the coast is not marginalized or overlooked but is instead recognized as a critical region that deserves access to quality educational opportunities.

Dr. Rodney Bennett, incoming president at The University of Southern Mississippi, addresses a large group of students who turned out for a campus cleanup project on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The student-led project was coordinated in response to the EF-4 tornado that struck the Southern Miss campus and the Hattiesburg area on Sunday, Feb. 10.

Kristen Dupard and Jeremy Moore, students at The University of Southern Mississippi, have been selected to attend the 2015 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU), set for March 6-8 at the University of Miami.

Kristen Dupard and Jeremy Moore, students at The University of Southern Mississippi, have been selected to attend the 2015 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU), set for March 6-8 at the University of Miami.

Established in 2007, CGI University challenges college students to address global issues with practical, innovative solutions. Participants take concrete steps to solve problems by creating action plans, building relationships, participating in hands-on workshops, and following up with CGIU as they complete their projects.

Dahlia Amato, a second-year doctoral student at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected as a finalist for one of the prestigious Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.

 

Amato, a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, is pursuing her doctorate in polymer science under the tutelage of Dr. Derek Patton. She is one of only 77 applicants chosen as finalists from approximately 1,200 applicants nationwide. Thirty fellowships will be awarded in March. Amato is the first Southern Miss student to become a Soros Fellowship finalist.

It was 1984 and the movie “Terminator,” with Arnold Schwarzenegger was released along with Apple’s new Macintosh computer. And on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Lawrence Mead began his career as a Golden Eagle.

It was 1984 and the movie “Terminator,” with Arnold Schwarzenegger was released along with Apple’s new Macintosh computer. And on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Lawrence Mead began his career as a Golden Eagle.

Mead, a native of Michigan, has been teaching at Southern Miss for 30 years, “Plus one semester,” he says jokingly. Mead, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, recently announced his retirement from the University.
