To celebrate the end of the 2011-12 school year, the College of Science and Technology hosted an appreciation lunch for more than 200 faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and graduate assistants.  The event gave students, faculty, staff, and administration to celebrate the end of the semester and graduation.

Dr. Barry Farmer, chief scientist of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, visited the University of Southern Mississippi campus recently discussing advanced materials and their application, including being enablers for new technology and possible limiters for performance.

Farmer had breakfast with graduate students from the College of Science and Technology and held an afternoon lecture for faculty, staff, and students.

The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Career Services recently offered a seminar for preprofessional students designed to assist them in interview preparation, writing personal statements for applications, and overall resume and professional school application preparation.

Tara Burcham, coordinator of public relations in the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi, won two professional awards at the 2012 Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) awards banquet held recently in Columbus, Miss.

Tara Burcham, coordinator of public relations in the College of Science and Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi, won two professional awards at the 2012 Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) awards banquet held recently in Columbus, Miss.

Burcham received a PRism award in the category Writing for Public Relations for the news release “USM Science and Mentoring Program Reaches Local High Schools.”  In the category of Images, Burcham also won a PRism award for the “USM Science Mentoring Photo.”

One hundred years ago this week, the RMS Titanic, a state-of-the-art British ocean liner sailing on its maiden voyage, struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sunk. More than 1,500 passengers lost their lives in this catastrophic maritime incident that was the catalyst for a comprehensive international treaty addressing maritime operations.

University of Southern Mississippi sophomore Tyler Brown, of Biloxi, Miss., has been awarded the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society’s Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship.

University of Southern Mississippi sophomore Tyler Brown, of Biloxi, Miss., has been awarded the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society’s Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship.

Brown, a chemistry and polymer science double major, is spending the spring semester studying at England’s University of Exeter.

Saunders announced today that Vice President for Research Dr. Denis Wiesenburg has been named as the university’s next provost, pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The change is effective July 1.

The University of Southern Mississippi was well represented at the 2012 Mississippi State Level Science and Engineering Fair held at the Mississippi Coast Convention Center in Biloxi on March 27.

In addition to the university’s Interim Chief Information Officer David Sliman serving as the science fair’s organizer, Gulf Coast Vice President and Campus Executive Officer, Dr. Frances Lucas, and Interim Provost and Vice President for Research, Dr. Denis Wiesenburg, both served as keynote speakers at the daylong event.

The Center for Logistics, Trade and Transportation (CLTT) at The University of Southern Mississippi continues to emphasize the importance of linking students with industry. 

CLTT's participation in MODEX 2012, the industry's newest expo for the manufacturing, distribution and supply chain industries, provided a unique opportunity for students to relate their classroom theories with real life implementations in the industry. The event was held at Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress in February.

Students who enjoy science and nature will want to participate in the hands-on experience provided by University of Southern Mississippi summer camps set for this summer.

Titled “Survivor: Young Naturalist Camp,” the camps are scheduled for June 24 – 29, 2012 (rising 8th – 12th graders) and July 8 –13, 2012 (rising 4th – 7th graders). The summer program, which began in 2005, is sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences.

Woosley's visit was sponsored by the College of Science and Technology Premedical and Health Professions Office. Representatives from the Harrison School of Pharmacy visit the Southern Miss campus each spring semester.
