Our ability and willingness to come together and talk through issues will build a solid foundation for the University and the coastal community to become a much more economically progressive area.

As President of The University of Southern Mississippi, I am deeply troubled that USM’s commitment to meeting the needs of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been called into question. I am aware of the historical tension surrounding access to higher education in the coastal community, and I respect each community member who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the coast is not marginalized or overlooked but is instead recognized as a critical region that deserves access to quality educational opportunities.

For Dr. Faye Gilbert, serving as president of the Southern Business Administration Association (SBAA) means honoring a commitment to provide students with the most rewarding college experience possible.

Gilbert, dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, has spent the first half of 2015 as the SBAA president after serving as vice president of Programs last year and as secretary/treasurer in 2012-13. She is the first Southern Miss dean to occupy the president’s chair since Dean Emeritus Dr. Joseph Greene held the office in 1967-68.

The program features a wide range of diverse students drawn from colleges and universities, the military, private sector, public sectors and the non-profit and non-governmental sector.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business began relocating July 15 to Scianna Hall, its new home, from Joseph Greene Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

 

On May 10, 2012, Southern Miss officials broke ground on Scianna Hall, a 93,000-square-foot facility located next to the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. It is named in honor of Southern Miss alumnus Charles “Chuck” Scianna, who committed $6 million toward the project. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the facility will be held in September.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business began relocating July 15 to Scianna Hall, its new home, from Joseph Greene Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.

MBA alumni were welcomed back to The University of Southern Mississippi at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach on Tuesday, June 16, for the first reunion in the program’s more than 50-year history.

MBA alumni were welcomed back to The University of Southern Mississippi at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach on Tuesday, June 16, for the first reunion in the program’s more than 50-year history.

The reunion started with a luncheon, which was followed by round-table discussions aimed at both reconnecting with alumni and developing the current program. “The reunion provided an invaluable opportunity to discuss our curriculum, experiences, and career development,” said Dr. Faye Gilbert, dean of the College of Business.

Dr. Amy Chasteen Miller has been named The University of Southern Mississippi’s Associate Provost for Academic Excellence, effective July 1. Miller will lead the University’s increased foci on undergraduate student engagement and faculty development.

The position will help USM students thrive through retention initiatives, recognition of student excellence and opportunities for active learning. It will also support faculty through programs that enhance orientation and mentoring, as well as support for advising.

The Southern Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) concluded its series of educational high school events and competitions on Friday, May 1, by hosting its 8th annual SEP State Business Plan Competition on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.

Southern Miss students have been able to take classes at the University’s campuses in Hattiesburg and in Long Beach for many years, and now the first students have begun working toward their MBA entirely through online offerings.

The Marine Industries Science and Technology (MIST) Cluster program, managed by The University of Southern Mississippi, will host its second quarterly Small Business Summit on Monday, April 27, on the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The summit will be held from 7:45 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Fleming Education Center.

Mississippi Supreme Court Associate Justice Randy G. Pierce will be speaking on Thursday, March 26th at 2 p.m. in the Polymer Science Auditorium at The University of Southern Mississippi as a part of the College of Business’s Ethics Forum.

Mississippi Supreme Court Associate Justice Randy G. Pierce will be speaking on Thursday, March 26th at 2 p.m. in the Polymer Science Auditorium at The University of Southern Mississippi as a part of the College of Business’s Ethics Forum.

Pierce is a 1987 graduate of USM’s College of Business, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He then became a Certified Public Accountant before receiving his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from USM. He later attended and graduated from Ole Miss Law School.

Tanner Shaw, a senior finance major at The University of Southern Mississippi, was awarded the prestigious Orrin W. Swayze Scholarship by the Mississippi Young Bankers Association during the group’s annual conference held earlier this month at Marriott’s Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Ala.

Tanner Shaw, a senior finance major at The University of Southern Mississippi, was awarded the prestigious Orrin W. Swayze Scholarship by the Mississippi Young Bankers Association during the group’s annual conference held earlier this month at Marriott’s Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Ala.

The $5,000 award is presented annually to the top Magnolia State university major in banking and finance who best represents the tradition of banking excellence exemplified by Swayze, a senior officer for Trustmark until his retirement in 1967.

Entrepreneurship students from the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi took second-place honors during the Alley Scholars Leadership Summit and Shark Tank competition held Feb. 28 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

The students won a cash prize of $2,500 and were led by Shonice Musgrove (senior, entrepreneurship major); Kimberly Loving (senior, entrepreneurship major); Georgia Justice (senior, entrepreneurship major), and Irene Morton (junior, human resources major).

More than 91 companies were represented during The University of Southern Mississippi’s 2015 Spring Career Fair held Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

More than 91 companies were represented during The University of Southern Mississippi’s 2015 Spring Career Fair held Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

The fair, hosted by the Office of Career Services, enabled Southern Miss students and alumni to network, discuss résumés and learn about careers and internship opportunities.

The forum provides a hands-on learning experiences for business students across the country to improve their leadership skills.
