Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Studies
Effective Date: Fall 2009

The graduate certificate in Nonprofit Studies is an interdisciplinary program which provides students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for work in the non-profit sector. This certificate program is appropriate for currently enrolled Southern Miss graduate students who wish to pursue career in the nonprofit sector as well as individuals with a baccalaureate degree who are currently employed in or wish to transition to the nonprofit sector and need additional or specialized training. The graduate certificate can also be used to complete requirements for the American Humanics certification. Admission Requirements
All applications for the graduate certificate program must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies. Applicants not currently admitted in another degree program at the University of Southern Mississippi are admitted to the certificate program as a non-degree seeking student. Applicants must complete the Application for Admission for Graduate Studies, indicating Non-Degree under Academic Status, and submit the application to the Graduate Studies Office, 118 College Drive #10066, Hattiesburg, MS 39406. All applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an institution approved by a recognized accrediting agency and show evidence of being in good standing at the last college or university attended.

Admission Deadline
Admission shall be on an ongoing basis.

Programs Requirements
1) The student will complete credit hour and course requirements as described below with an overall 3.0 GPA. 2) The student will complete program requirements within four years. 3) No more than nine (9) semester hours of work from the certificate program may be used toward a master’s degree. No more than twelve (12) semester hours of work from the certificate program may be used toward a doctoral degree.

Course Requirements
Students are required to take ONE course in each of the following competency areas, 1-5. The minimum total credit hours required for completion of the certificate is 15 credit hours. Please note that not all courses are taught every semester and programs may place restrictions on enrollment for certain courses. You should check with the Director of Nonprofit Studies, Dr. Ann Marie Kinnell, ann.kinnell@usm.edu, before enrolling in a course.
