MASTER’S DEGREE IN NURSING PROGRAM (MSN)

 

Two nursesThe Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program prepares nurse experts in advanced practice and/or management for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered healthcare delivery. The program broadens the perspective of students by offering an innovative scientific and research based curriculum that prepares graduates for practice in today’s healthcare environment. The education program includes both didactic work and clinical practice experience. Each student completes the graduate-nursing core including evidenced based practice (research and statistics),  ethics and role development, and health care policy and finance.


MSN programs require 34-44 credits during a minimum of 15-24 months of full-time study. Graduates will have completed the educational requirements for appropriate certification. Both full-time and part-time study is available.


Students pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) may choose from several areas of concentration which include core, cognate, and focused theoretical and clinical/management courses in their selected area of study. Options include:

 

 

 

POST MASTER'S CERTIFICATE

Students who have earned a master’s degree in nursing are able to enroll in post-master's coursework to complete requirements needed for nurse practitioner certification. To be eligible an applicant must:

  1. A Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited program (NLNAC or CCNE).
  2. Satisfactory completion of the following courses at the Master's level:
    • Advanced Health Assessment:                               2 credit hours
    • Advanced Health Assessment Clinical or Lab:          1 credit hour
    • Advanced Pathophysiology:                                   3 credit hours
    • Advanced Pharmacology:                                      3 credit hours
  3. Unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi.
  4. Overall G.P.A. of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  5. Recommendation forms from at least three persons (a minimum of one academic) familiar with the applicant's academic and professional background and experience in nursing practice, specifying in detail the applicant's capabilities for graduate study and for future practice as an advanced practice nurse.

 

RN-MSN  


This option offers Registered Nurses with an Associate’s Degree,  a streamlined course of study to prepare for advanced practice and/or management for leadership in professional nursing practice and patient-centered healthcare delivery.  After completing the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) the student may apply for any of the clinical/management concentration areas. Students are given 40 hours credit for undergraduate nursing course work. The student must complete 17 hours of the undergraduate curriculum and the core courses in the curriculum prior to beginning the graduate emphasis courses.
