Gift announcement begins campaign for new building

Expanding enrollment from 550 to 800+ students, addressing nursing shortage
Increasing community programs and preparing nurses for non-hospital settings
Increasing the best-in-state number of baccalaureate-prepared nursing graduates

With the announcement of a $4 million gift commitment for a new building, The University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing will increase its already significant impact as a health care provider for the citizens of Mississippi and throughout the Gulf South.

Addressing a nursing shortage

A state-of-the-art facility will provide an applied learning space to help produce the nurses desperately needed to fill the health care requirements of the state of Mississippi and neighboring states such as Louisiana, Alabama and Florida. A new building will empower nursing faculty to continue to strive for instructional excellence and will further impact our ability to recruit qualified students and faculty.

With a strong mission to enhance the health and well-being of the people of the state of Mississippi, the Southern Miss School of Nursing is producing graduates who are prepared to advance the profession of nursing through education, scholarship and service.

Community health care

The majority of nurses in the future will not be in the hospital but will be in the community. A new School of Nursing building will enable Southern Miss to combine the education of our nursing students with community involvement through

  • Caregiver support groups that include education about treatments, medication and how to garner resources from the health providers;
  • Competency-based skill check-offs with health care providers, first responders and others;
  • Education for families about how to manage issues such as chronic care, how to access the system and how to manage medication;
  • Activities with all age groups relating to health; and
  • Health screening activities.

Academic learning environment

The new facility will provide more educational opportunities for nursing students and faculty by increasing or adding the following:

  • Square footage dedicated to the School of Nursing by 135 percent
  • Nursing enrollment from the current 550 students to more than 800 and expand new programs
  • Enlarged and enhanced clinical simulation lab
  • Research center
  • Computer labs
  • Interactive, technology-enhanced classrooms
  • Student study and gathering spaces
  • Dining area
  • Student lounge
  • Learning resource area
  • Community program and meeting space
