Guidelines for obtaining eTextbooks (Audio Books)

For help with options in Step One, Step Two or find eTextbooks from other sources, please make an appointment with Karen Lott at Office for Disability Accommodations (ODA) by calling 601.266.5024 or email Karen.lott@usm.edu.

Step One:

Students requesting textbooks in an alternate format should attempt to acquire electronic copies of their textbooks through the following sources:

Barnes and Noble at Southern Miss

  • Barnes and Noble at Southern Miss offer many eTextbook options for students. To find more information about eTextbooks and formats available at Barnes and Noble at Southern Miss go to http://usm.bncollege.com and click on Textbooks then Find Textbooks. Enter course information in spaces provided to get list of textbooks for your classes.
  • eTextbooks from Barnes and Noble can be read aloud using Text-to-Speech readers (ie JAWS, Natural Reader, VoiceOver on iOS devices, etc.)

Bookshare http://www.bookshare.org

This service is free to qualifying members. Bookshare provides books in DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) and Braille Refreshable Format (BRF). ODA can help to certify qualifying members.  ODA can provide textbooks through this service through its organizational membership.

Learning Ally http://www.learningally.org

Learning Ally produces books in audio format and DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) format for members who qualify. Students may purchase a Learning Ally membership. Go to Learning Ally’s website for membership options or use the organizational membership available through ODA.  If you choose to use the organizational membership, ODA will issue a user id and password.

Step Two

If the book is unavailable from sources above, the student will need to purchase a print copy and bring to the ODA with proof of purchase (receipt).  Textbooks converted by ODA may need to have the book’s binding cut to be scanned.  ODA will have the Copy Center rebind the book with a spiral or comb binder at no charge to the student. The student will not be able to return this textbook to Barnes and Noble at Southern Miss for buy back procedures at the end of the semester.
