Fire/Safety Department

Inspections

The Safety Department inspects all campus buildings biannually. The inspectors look for violations of the Fire Prevention Code and the Life Safety Code.

ADA Compliance

All new construction and major renovation follow the federal regulations for ADA compliance. The Southern Miss Physical Plant strives to make all building areas ADA friendly.

Fire Alarms

The campus contains more than 5,000 smoke detectors. The Safety Department works closely with the Electronic Services Department to ensure all smoke detectors function properly. The Safety Department runs fire drills in all residence halls and fraternity houses each semester.

Building Code Compliance

The Safety Department works closely with the Southern Miss engineers and architects to ensure all new construction and major renovations comply with the Standard Building Code.

Fire Suppression Systems

All automatic sprinkler systems are flowed and tested by the Safety Department.

Building Inspections

The Safety Inspector inspects all buildings biannually. After each inspection an inspection report is written up and mailed to the building liaison, the appropriate dean or chairman and the state fire marshal. During inspections the inspector looks for violations of the Fire Prevention Code and The Life Safety Code. Examples of some of the Southern Miss Fire Safety Rules are listed in the links below:
