  • In response to numerous requests, our department has decided to offer a "Physics for High-School Teachers" course (PHY 604) during the summer semester. Interested persons should contact Dr. Christopher Sirola.


  • Carrie Walker, a senior physics major, received for the second time the prestigious Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. She will spend another summer working in the atomic physics group of Dr. William Phillips (Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997).


  • Christopher Winstead, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, leads the approximately $2 million Eagle Eyes project. The focus is developing optical methods incorporating novel signal processing techniques for the detection of nuclear materials. The project results have application in Homeland Defense.


  • Grayson Rayborn, Emeritus Professor of Physics and Astronomy, leads the approximately 0.9 million Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center project in conjunction with Southern Miss's Departments of Psychology and Marine Science, The University of New Orleans, and the Naval Research Laboratory in mapping the Gulf of Mexico's acoustical background. The project has applications in national security and in acoustical infringement of the endangered Sperm whale's habitat.


  • Joon C. Lee, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, published the book "Thermal Physics: Entropies and Free Energies" in 2002. The book has received favorable reviews from two experts. Professor Lee incorporated a refreshing relaxed approach to the study of thermal physics.
