Undergraduate Advising
|
| All undergraduate
students in the department should select a faculty
advisor. Advising sessions typically take place
during arranged sessions near the midpoint of
each term. At these sessions students are assisted
in course selection and degree planning. Students
should also take advantage of the opportunity
to visit informally with their advisor at other
times to discuss course selection, career goals,
and possibilities for further study. |
|
Application for Degree
|
| Near the middle
of the semester BEFORE the one in which you plan
to graduate, students should set a special appointment
with their advisor to go over the degree application
(see forms links on the Undergraduate
Forms page)
and to ensure that all requirements for the General
Education core, the major, and the minor, have
been satisfied. Once the advisor and student
have signed the forms to apply for graduation,
no changes to the planned schedule should be
made unless in consultation with the advisor
and/or staff in the dean's office. |
Students Not in Academic Good Standing
|
| Those students who, for whatever reason, find
their grades have slipped should consult immediately
with their advisor. Often the solution to academic
difficulties is much easier to implement when those
difficulties first arise. Problems become much
more difficult to solve if left unaddressed. For
this reason, students whose grade point averages
place them either in Academic Probation Continued
or Academic Suspension MUST meet with their advisor
and/or the department chair before they will be
able to register, to add, or to drop classes in
SOAR. A form to facilitate this meeting is available
on the Undergraduate
Forms page. |
Graduate Advising
|
Master's students are normally
advised by the Master's Program Coordinator (currently
Dr. Marek Steedman).
Doctoral students, upon enterring
the Ph.D. program select a major and minor "research
team" from among the four emphasis areas--Political
Development, Economic Development, Security Studies,
and Cultural/Social Aspects of Development. Normally
students in the doctoral program are advised
by the faculty member who leads their major "research
team." Further information about each team is
available on the Ph.D.
program page.
