Are you interested in increasing opportunity for people in the South and becoming a leader in your region? If your answer is YES, then the Autry Fellowship at MDC may be for you!
The Board of Directors of MDC Inc. is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2006-2007 Autry Fellowship, a prestigious post-baccalaureate fellowship focusing on economic and social justice. The Autry Fellowship's goal is to increase economic opportunity for poor people and poor places in North Carolina and across the South by developing a cadre of young leaders who have experience in issues related to economic development, workforce development, and community capacity building in the South and are poised and ready to apply their new learning to benefit this state and the region.
The Autry Fellowship celebrates the life and perpetuates the work of the late George B. Autry, founding president of MDC. For 32 years, he led MDC with a passion for improving opportunities for people and places struggling to keep pace with economic and social change. The Fellowship provides a one-year, full-time paid position for a recent college graduate to work at MDC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Fellow's time will center on learning MDC's strategies for change by participating on a variety of project teams; the Fellow will have the option of devoting a portion of time to a project-specific assignment that will blend the interests of the Fellow with the specific needs of MDC during that year.
Applicants must either be in their final year of undergraduate or graduate study at or have graduated from any accredited four-year college or university in the South. The 2006-2007 Fellowship will begin in the summer of 2006, with the exact starting date to be determined by the Fellow and MDC staff. The application process is competitive; a selection panel of MDC board and staff members and Autry family members will review applications and interview candidates. Applications must be received by March 3, 2006. For more information and an application, see MDC's web site, www.mdcinc.org.

MDC's mission is to advance the South through strategies that expand opportunity, reduce poverty, and build inclusive communities. We analyze trends to identify challenges that impede progress for the South and its people, and we address those challenges from multiple angles. Our core strategies include developing responsive public policies; demonstrating effective programs; building institutional and community capacity for progress; and informing the public dialogue. Established in 1967, MDC is a private, nonprofit organization supported with grants and contracts from foundations; federal, state, and local governments; and the private sector.
