The Bishop Award

The Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian Award

The Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian Award was established in 1978 by Ms. Elna Bishop in loving memory of her father, Judge R.J. Bishop. This award honors men and women who have endured economic, family or physical hardships to pursue their education so that they, their children, and other Mississippians might have a better life.

The students that are nominated must be graduating seniors, native Mississippians, and have a record of work ethics and determination that shows success in spite of difficulties. Selection is made by a committee of university employees.

The first Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian Award was presented in 1985. To date, there have been 21 recipients of this prestigious award. Prior to 1985, there had been 5 “scholarships” awarded from the fund.

The recipient of the 2005 Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian Award was presented a check for $5,000.00 on Awards Day from the USM Foundation, the administrator of the fund. Award amounts vary depending on earnings.
