Hattiesburg -- The University of Southern Mississippi School of Mass Communication and Journalism will induct two former faculty members and six alumni into the school’s Hall of Fame as part of the Southern Mississippi Photojournalism Summit Oct. 12.
Retired professors James Bishop and Ed Wheeler will be inducted at a luncheon that day, along with six Southern Miss graduates who have had distinguished careers as photojournalists. They include • Steve Gardner, a freelance photographer who lives in Tokyo; he has published several books and his photos have appeared in many national magazines, including Time and Newsweek.
• Tim Isbell, a photographer for the (Biloxi) Sun Herald who was part of the Sun Herald team that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Community Service for the newspaper’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
• Ted Jackson, a photographer for the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune, where he has twice been part of the newspaper’s Pulitzer-winning projects, including its coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
• Jeff McAdory, picture editor at the (Memphis) Commercial Appeal and a former Guggenheim Fellow.
• Michael McCarter, currently picture editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution but who was recently selected to be the new director of photography at the Cincinnati Enquirer.
• Marianne Todd, a freelance photographer who lives in Meridian whose photos have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine and other publications all over the world. Bishop taught at the university from 1967 until 1990. He also directed the newspaper production office and advised the advertising staff of The Student Printz. Wheeler taught at Southern Miss from 1977 to 1995, during which time he established the department’s highly regarded photojournalism program. “The Hall of Fame was created last year to give the School of Mass Communication and Journalism a way of recognizing its many distinguished graduates, as well as other Mississippians who have contributed to the school or to mass communication and journalism in the state,” said Dr. Chris Campbell, director of the school. “The six alumni photojournalists all studied under Ed Wheeler, so it will be nice to honor them at the same event. The only problem is that there are a few dozen other photojournalism graduates we could also be honoring for their success in the field. We’ll plan on doing this again in the not-too-distant future,” Campbell said. The summit, which will feature talks by each of the graduates about their work and careers, will be held in the Cochran Center on the Southern Miss campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12. It is free and open to the public. A silent auction that will include prints by the Hall of Fame photographers will be held in the Cochran Center Friday through homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 13. Tickets to the luncheon are $30 and are available by contacting the School of Mass Communication and Journalism at 601.266.4258. Proceeds will benefit the Ed Wheeler Photojournalism Fund and the Damian Morgan Memorial Scholarship Endowment, which was established to help deserving photojournalism students. The School of Mass Communication and Journalism will host a second silent auction to benefit the photojournalism program from 6 - 9 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Bottling Company in downtown Hattiesburg. Gardner, who is also an accomplished blues musician, will perform during this event. “We hope the events will raise the visibility of our photojournalism program, which has turned out so many respected photographers working all over the country and the world, while at the same time honoring two of the individuals responsible for positively affecting so many students’ lives,” said Campbell. The Southern Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism is one of the university’s largest, with more than 500 majors working toward degrees in 12 disciplines, including journalism, public relations, broadcast journalism and film.
