HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- WUSM-FM 88.5, the official radio station of The University of Southern Mississippi has recently announced a new programming lineup that will offer listeners more opportunities to hear popularly requested genres such as classical, blues and jazz.

The programming change, says manager Jeff Rassier, was initiated in response to local listeners who have expressed interest in reducing time allotted for syndicated talk shows in order to showcase more musical programming.

“WUSM will better serve the community with the new programming schedules and reduce confusion about our schedule,” Rassier said. “We are now the only station on the FM dial providing classical music.”

“Additionally, we have made it easier for our audience to know what is on WUSM by extending the same types of program, at the same times each day, across the entire weekly schedule,” he added.

In addition to the new lineup, “That College Music Show,” a late-night music block geared specifically for college students, has been updated to include alternative, AAA, Americana, hip hop, electronic, metal, pop and all subgroups of rock music.

The new programming schedule for WUSM is as follows:

• “The Classical Source”    3 a.m.-noon
• “WUSM Noon News” & “Noticias en Español” noon-1 p.m.
• “The Classical Source”    1-5 p.m.
• “Hub City Blues”     5-7 p.m.
• “Sounds of Jazz”     7-11 p.m.
• “That College Music Show”    11 p.m.-3 a.m.

The station is also seeking feedback from listeners about their public radio experiences. As part of the “My Source” initiative, WUSM is seeking stories from listeners about their personal public radio experience. Some of the stories will be aired locally on WUSM, posted on the station’s Web site or even disseminated nationally.

Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, this public awareness initiative is designed to increase recognition of public radio and to strengthen the bond between stations and communities.
