Gulfport, Miss. – A group of University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast professors were honored recently for their effective use of technology in their classrooms during the Associate Provost’s Distinguished Professor of e-Learning Awards Luncheon.
The awards, made possible through funds contributed by Butch Oustalet, recognized faculty members for their dedication and commitment to technology-rich learning and teaching. Dr. Pat Joachim, associate provost of Southern Miss Gulf Coast, and Oustalet announced the four winning faculty members during the luncheon. “These professors deepen the learning environment by promoting critical thinking and developing communication skills, while using multimedia tools to expand conceptual knowledge and technological understanding,” Joachim said. Southern Miss Gulf Coast welcomed Dr. Jeff Layton of renowned technology company Dell Inc. as the keynote speaker for the event. Layton was recognized for his organization’s contribution to the awards luncheon and by providing Dell printers to the university. Receiving the top award of $1,000 and the title of 2008 Distinguished Professor of e-Learning was Dr. David Holt. An assistant professor of geography, Holt received the award for using a wide variety of technology to teach his students. By relating students’ everyday lives to assignments, they learned not only in the classroom but outside as well. The Award of Excellence and $500 was awarded to Dr. Heather Annulis of the Jack and Patti Phillips Workplace Learning and Performance Institute (WLPI). Students enrolled in the WLPI program come from all across the United States. Annulis, assistant professor and assistant director of the WLPI, is able to bring those students together using special programs to conduct class. Two professors each received the Award of Achievement and $250. Dr. MD Sarder, assistant professor in the School of Construction, and Dr. David Marchman, professor and associate director of the School of Construction, were both honored for their use of technology to benefit construction majors. Sarder has developed a course that is designed for active learning, collaboration, interactive communication and critical thinking. Another way Sarder is helping his students learn is through archiving his lessons so students may access them any time throughout the course. Marchman is considered a pioneer of technology integration at Southern Miss. Through use of online classroom interaction, Marchman has provided access to a learning environment that otherwise may not be attainable in the field of construction technology.
