HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Alabama native Dr. Lance Nail has been named dean of the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi, effective July 1.
Nail has served as chair of the Department of Finance, Economics and Quantitative Methods for the past five years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Business. He joins Southern Miss following the retirement of Dr. Alvin Williams, who has served as interim dean for the past year. “Dr. Nail comes to us with high praise from those with whom he has worked in the past,” said Southern Miss President Martha Saunders. “He is a hardworking problem-solver with a strong vision for the College of Business.” Nail said he is honored and excited to join Southern Miss. “President Saunders has clearly expressed her belief that Southern Miss and the Gulf Coast region deserve and demand a preeminent College of Business,” said Nail. “There exists tremendous potential at Southern Miss, and I feel fortunate to have been asked to work with all of the college’s stakeholders to develop programs and people in the College of Business at the University of Southern Mississippi.” A faculty member at UAB for more than a decade, Nail’s research interests are in the areas of corporate governance, insider trading and international investing. His research findings have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance and Journal of Banking and Finance. Currently, he is managing editor for International Review of Financial Analysis. Active in professional organizations, Nail is a member of the boards of directors for the CFA Society of Alabama, the Risk Management Association – Birmingham Chapter, and the Southern Finance Association and Eastern Finance Associations. During his tenure as department chair at UAB, he spearheaded several external relations initiatives, including the development of a UAB School of Business Finance Advisory Board and creation of the award-winning Green and Gold Student Investment Fund. Nail also received teaching honors as recipient of the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year Award as a faculty member at UAB. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Nail was a senior consultant with Ernst & Young LLP National consulting Group. He received a doctorate in finance with a minor in economics from the University of Georgia in 1996 and a Bachelor of Science degree in finance with a minor in economics from the University of Alabama in 1989, graduating first in his class at Alabama.
