A University of Southern Mississippi student has earned a scholarship from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to help him pay to study abroad in Spain during his senior year.

Zachary Dozier, an anthropology and Spanish major from Tupelo, is the recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, established to help prepare college students to succeed in a global economy and interdependent world through international education.

Dozier will receive $5,000 in support through the scholarship while he studies at the University of Jaén in Jaén, Spain, for the 2008-09 academic year. Southern Miss initiated its student exchange program with Jaén in 2004. “I’m really thankful for the opportunity to receive support for something I’m so invested in,” he said.

He will study both Spanish and anthropology in Jaén, giving him the opportunity to obtain fluency in Spanish. Dozier also plans to travel throughout Europe during his stay. “It’s not a bad way to spend your senior year in college,” he said.

Competition for the Gilman Scholarship is strong, said Southern Miss Director of International Education Dr. Susan Steen, who has served on the scholarship’s selection panel in the past.

“The caliber of applications is extremely high, so Zach's award is a testament to his outstanding academic and personal achievements,” Steen said. “We're delighted that he was chosen.”

After he returns from Spain, Dozier plans to take the remaining classes necessary for graduation and then pursue graduate studies in both foreign languages and contemporary world issues.

“Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity for students to enhance their academic experience while being immersed in another culture,” said Alex Kenner, coordinator of international programs at Southern Miss. “We’re pleased for Zach and know he will be a great ambassador for the university and Mississippi.”
