Goodsell Chosen for Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Seminar

HATTIESBURG, MISS. -- The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has named University of Southern Mississippi professor of practice in television production Joey Goodsell a 2008 Faculty Seminar Fellow.

Goodsell is one of only 20 educators from universities and colleges around the country invited to participate in the weeklong seminar Nov. 11-15 in Los Angeles, Calif.

“Joey already brings a unique perspective to the classroom through his professional production experience,” said Dr. Chris Campbell, director of the School of Mass Communication and Journalism. “Working with producers, directors and writers through The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is a tremendous opportunity for him to enhance our media production program.”

The Faculty Seminar, administered through the Television Academy Foundation, provides a forum for discussion, presentations and interactions with major studios, production companies, networks and top production and programming professionals in the industry. All the inner workings of the television entertainment industry are covered, including production, writing, show development, digital entertainment and more.

“Most people think television production is the nightly news cast, but I try to bring all the aspects of television production to the classroom to show our students that this field stretches far beyond that,” said Goodsell. “Students have so many choices today in production, whether it’s narrative storytelling like sitcoms and dramas or commercials and music videos.

“Being part of this Faculty Seminar will allow me to bring the latest developments and trends in entertainment production from the source and incorporate that into my course curriculum.”

Goodsell has more than 20 years experience writing and producing for television and radio and 12 years experience teaching. His work includes “Webb Wilder: Tough It Out,” an internationally distributed concert performance DVD that has won both Telly and Accolade awards and been featured on PBS stations across the country. He is currently in post-production on a concert performance DVD for the Detroit-based band Deadstring Brothers.
