Dr. Michael Forster has been selected as dean for the College of Health at The University of Southern Mississippi. Since April 2008, Forster has served as the college’s interim dean. He was selected following a national search for the position.
“As interim dean, I came to fully recognize the excellence and importance of all seven disciplines making up the College of Health," Forster said. "I feel energized by the enthusiasm, talents and tremendous potential of our people and programs. The best is yet to come.”
Since 1994, Forster’s accomplishments within the College of Health’s School of Social Work have included serving as the school’s director; assisting in the creation of SWORD, a network database for Mississippi youth courts; and providing leadership to improve the operations of the Mississippi Department of Human Service's Division of Family and Children's Services.
He is also co-founder of the Family Network Partnership, a community-based direct service organization that includes a free after-school program for Hattiesburg students, and is a founding member of the Mississippi Social Work Education Consortium.
Forster is the recipient of a Mississippi Conference for Social Welfare Merit Award for his contributions to the field of social welfare and social services.
"In his years of service to Southern Miss as a faculty member, department chair and interim dean, Dr. Michael Forster has demonstrated that he has the administrative skills, the interpersonal abilities and the vision to be a highly effective senior administrator," said Southern Miss Provost Dr. Robert Lyman. "I am sure that he will lead the College of Health to even greater success in the coming years."
