                         Spring Registration Set for Southern Miss Gulf Coast Nov. 20-Dec. 20

Gulfport – The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast invites students to register early for spring semester 2007. Beginning Nov. 20 through Dec. 20, students may register for undergraduate or graduate classes that will begin Jan. 15.

                                       New Orleans Glass Artist to Lecture at Southern Miss

Hattiesburg -- Mitchell Gaudet, New Orleans glass artist whose Myth of Romance collection is on view at the University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art, will return to Hattiesburg for a gallery talk and brief slide presentation from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the museum.

Born and raised in New Orleans and owner of his own studio, Studio Inferno, Gaudet designs and produces cast glass. His gallery talk is presented in conjunction with the preconcert patron reception for the 7:30 p.m. Symphony Orchestra concert with guest pianist Kevin Kenner. 

The reception, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Museum, is sponsored by Montague, Pittman & Varnado Attorneys, along with co-sponsors of the exhibition--Drs. Ray and Frances Karnes and Partners for the Arts.

The University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art is located in the Fine Arts Building at the southwest corner of campus. The hours are Tuesday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Admission to the museum is free and open to the public.                Rachel’s Challenge Program Will Feature Columbine Shooting Victim as Speaker

Hattiesburg – A motivational program borne out of the tragic shootings at Columbine High School and named after one of the victims will be presented at the University of Southern Mississippi Nov. 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballrooms I and II.

Former Columbine student Nicole Nowlen will be the featured speaker at Rachel’s Challenge, a program designed to motivate young people to make positive changes in the way they treat others. The presentation includes video footage of the life of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rachel’s Challenge is designed to inspire, instruct and enable students to bring positive change to their school environment by emphasizing acceptance and understanding of differences in others and promotion of inclusion.

                       Southern Miss Office of Community Service Learning to Sponsor
                                                 Salvation Army Angel Tree Program

Hattiesburg
– The Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL) at the University of Southern Mississippi will sponsor The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. The tree will be set up in the Thad Cochran Center lobby beginning Friday, Nov. 10 through Wednesday, Dec. 6 or until all the angels are gone.

The purpose of the program is to provide holiday gifts for children ages 12 and younger and for seniors age 62 and above, whose applications are carefully screened by The Salvation Army.

The program is open to individuals, organizations and departments on campus, as well as the public. For more information, contact OCSL at 601.266.5074.

                                      Fifth Annual ‘Paint Southern Miss Pink’ A Success    

Hattiesburg
– The Fifth Annual “Paint Southern Miss Pink” festivities held throughout the University of Southern Mississippi’s campus during the month of October in recognition of breast cancer awareness month were a success.

The committee raised $6,164 to benefit the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation, which provides assistance to low income, underinsured women with breast cancer and raised approximately $1,470 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

In addition, 34 buildings and departments were recognized for their participation in the “Most Pink” contest, which allowed faculty, staff and groups on campus to show their support for the cause. Winners included nursing building – best creativity; student support services – best spirit; Southern Miss Credit Union – best atmosphere; Kappa Alpha Theta – best decorated balcony; Jones Residence Hall – best overall pinkness; and the Physical Plant for the best presentation of breast cancer awareness information.
                                                    

            Carpenter Installed as Governor for the Magnolia Civitan District

Hattiesburg – Melissa Carpenter, secretary for the Office of Student Activities at the University of Southern Mississippi, was installed as governor of the Magnolia Civitan District at a convention held recently in Houma, La.

Civitan is an international association of local community service clubs and one of the world’s leading volunteer service organizations. Local Civitan clubs meet a wide variety of needs in their communities, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

                  Southern Miss’ McNeese Selected Cooperative System Fellow by NCES

Hattiesburg -- Mary Nell McNeese, an assistant professor of education leadership and research at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected as one of 30 educators to be a Cooperative System Fellow by the National Center for Education Statistics in Washington, D.C.

She will participate in the Cooperative System Fellows Program Nov. 13-17 when she takes part in discussions to discover what other states are doing as well as to have the opportunity to discuss NCES publications and surveys.
