BUSINESS STUDENTS AWARDED BAC SCHOLARSHIPS

HATTIESBURG - Six undergraduate students in the College of Business and Economic Development at The University of Southern Mississippi are recipients of scholarships through the Business Advisory Council Faculty Scholars Program this fall.

The program pairs promising junior and senior business students with an expert research professor who serves as a mentor. Students receive a $1,000 scholarship and are given the opportunity to conduct research in their chosen field of study. Research assignments vary by professor and this fall include economic development, embezzlement in Mississippi, product placement, and cynicism in the workplace.

"As undergraduates, these students have a unique opportunity to work directly with faculty members on research projects, something more typically reserved for graduate students," said Dr. Harold Doty, dean of the college. "Through these scholarships, we are able to recognize students' potential and open the doors to a key learning experience for them."

Fall 2003 recipients are

--Windy Saucier, a senior accounting major from Purvis. The daughter of Steve and Barbara Saucier, she is working with Dr. James Crockett, professor of accounting.

-- Shalini Chandra, a senior management information systems major from Laurel. She is married to Anurag Chandra and is working with Dr. Edward Nissan, professor of economics.

-- Tessa Pousson, a senior economics major from Gretna, La. The daughter of Mark and Rebecca Pousson, she is working with Dr. Frank Mixon, professor of economics.

--Kelly Gambrell, a junior marketing major from Taylorsville. The daughter of Don and Laurie Gambrell, she is working with Dr. Laurie Babin, professor of marketing.

--Robert "Ty" Womack, a senior business management major from Mendenhall. The son of Billy Womack and Kathy Morris, he is working with Dr. Michael Vest, associate professor of management.

--Athena Sieber, a senior management information systems major from Long Beach. The daughter of James and Janelle Sieber, she is working with Dr. Chang-Tseh Hsieh, the McCarty professor of management information systems.

The BAC scholarships are made possible through the college's Business Advisory Council, a group of distinguished business leaders from Mississippi and other states who advise and support the College of Business and Economic Development. The scholarships are for one semester and are subject to renewal based upon successful completion of assignments and availability of funds.
