HATTIESBURG
-- The
Symphony Orchestra at The University of Southern Mississippi will
present a concert by a unique group of musicians Jan. 6 in Bennett
Auditorium. Cuerdas Latinas (Latin Strings) will perform a musical
repertoire based on Latin American music and contemporary international
music.
Twelve Latin
American and Spanish musicians, hailing from countries that include
Cuba, Honduras, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Spain--are
all members of the symphony at Southern Miss but consider themselves
as musical ambassadors.
The group formed
to give American audiences an opportunity to enjoy different musical
styles, most of which come from native Latin cultures. Concert master
Jorge Orozco conducts the group.
The evening's
program will consist of music by Latin American composers Aldemaro
Romero (Venezuela), Astor Piazzola (Argentina), as well as renowned
European composers including Maurice Ravel, Ludwig van Beethoven
and Franz Joseph Haydn.
Tickets for
the 7:30 p.m. concert are $14, $16, and $18. For tickets, call the
