The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast chapters of the
Psychology Student Association (PSA) and the national psychology
honor society Psi Chi recently helped raise money for new books
at the Gulf Park campus library.
Its weeklong
turkey feather fund-raiser, which lasted from November 17-21, was
a part of the "Brick to Books" campaign.
The event was
organized to raise $500 dollars so that PSA and Psi Chi could buy
a corporate brick to be placed in front of the library.
"PSA and
Psi Chi decided to do the fund-raiser because they felt students
benefit from a well supplied library," said Dr. Darlys Alford,
adviser for PSA and Psi Chi and associate professor of Psychology
at Southern Miss.
A total of
$485 was raised toward the brick purchase.
Twenty faculty
members participated in the fund-raiser. The faculty member with
the most feathers was chosen to wear the turkey costume for two
days before Thanksgiving.
Dr.Vincent
Stretch, assistant professor of psychology at Southern Miss Gulf
Coast, had the most feathers with a total of 196, and Dr. Darlys
Alford, adviser for PSA and Psi Chi and associate professor of psychology,
came in second with a total of 70 feathers.
"Bricks
to Books" provides money for library books through the purchase
of commemorative bricks and was started in 2002 with the construction
of the new library.
The bricks,
which can be engraved with the name of a family member or business,
are a way to donate money for books and serve as a lasting memorial.
