Gulf Coast explores state policies behind casinos in her newly published
book, The Big Gamble: The Politics of Lottery and Casino Expansion.
"What is unique about this book is that I am trying to get
behind the motives of the expansion of gambling, because I don't
think state policy-makers have thought about all of the consequences
carefully," said Dr. Denise von Herrmann, assistant professor
and chair of the Southern MissGC Division of Arts and Sciences.
In the book,
published by Praegar Publishing of Westport, Conn., Dec. 20, 2002,
von Herrmann examines the expansion of legal gambling within a framework
of seven key issues: who are the participants; what are their expectations
and beliefs; how, when, and where do they interact; what resources
do they possess; what strategies do they employ; what specific benefits
do they expect to achieve; and what are some of the longer-term
consequences of the outcomes of this policy.
"This
book is intended for anyone interested in studying public policy,
specifically state policy – why states are choosing gambling
and the condition of those states," von Herrmann said.
