GULFPORT - When 35 economic developers from
throughout the Southeast gathered in Gulfport for a continuing education
course, they knew they were improving their abilities to impact their
communities through economic development efforts. What they might
not have known is that they were also impacting the economy of the
city of Gulfport.
Findings of a recent impact study conducted by the Center for Community and Economic Development at The University of Southern Mississippi indicate that attendees of the New South Economic Development Course spent more than $16,000 during their stay in Gulfport. During the course, held Sept. 26-30 at the Grand Casino in Gulfport, the attendees spent more than $8,000 on hotel expenditures and more than $4,600 on food. Other general expenditures were estimated to be almost $3,500. In addition to contributing to local businesses, the course also contributed to the economy through sales tax collections. Over $1,100 was collected in total sales tax, of which approximately $210 will be rebated to the city of Gulfport. The NSEDC is an annual course for economic developers interested in improving their areas. The 2004 course was sponsored by The University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi Power and was coordinated by the CCED. Next year's course will be held Oct. 9-13.
