HATTIESBURG - Lindsay Mason, a hospitality management major at The University of Southern Mississippi, is one of two recipients of a national scholarship awarded by the Professional Convention Management Association.

"I couldn't believe it when I found out that I had been selected," said Mason, a junior from Hattiesburg. "I'll be able to work closely with the board and staff of PCMA. I couldn't ask for a better opportunity than that."

The scholarship winners will be recognized at the 49th annual conference set for Jan. 9-12, 2005, in Hawaii. Mason will assist PCMA board members during the conference.

"Lindsay is an outstanding student," said Dr. Catherine Price, professor of tourism management at Southern Miss. "This is the first time that a hospitality management student has applied for the scholarship. The university and the College of Business are very proud of her accomplishments."

Mason, the daughter of Grant Breland and Terra Mason, is also this year's recipient of the International Association of Assembly Managers District 5 scholarship and serves as vice president of the student chapter of PCMA at Southern Miss.

Mason chose to major in hospitality management after working at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center. She has worked there for more than two years and feels her experience was an advantage in winning the scholarship.

The New York City Convention and Visitors Bureau sponsors the PCMA scholarship that provides an opportunity for student members to network with industry leaders and fellow students while enjoying special distinction. The award includes airfare, hotel accommodations and registration for the conference.
