MISS TO HOST BASSMASTER UNIVERSITY JAN. 15-16

HATTIESBURG - Area anglers will get a chance to learn the tricks of the trade from some of the best bass fishermen in America when The University of Southern Mississippi hosts Bassmaster University Jan. 15-16 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will feature six of the country's top fishing professionals, including 2002 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year and 1999 Bassmaster Classic champion Davy Hite. Hite also won the 1997 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year title and is a seven-time Bassmaster Classic finalist. "This is our 31st year," said Gary White, director of Bassmaster University, who praised the quality of instruction his program will provide participants at Southern Miss. "We've got a strong group of guys we're bringing in." Also among the instructors will be 2000 Bassmaster Classic champion Woo Daves, as well as the 2003 gold medalist Shaw Grigsby. "We're excited about Basmaster coming to Southern Miss," said Kathy Bailey, manager of marketing and professional development for the Southern Miss Center for International and Continuing Education. "This course will give Mississippi anglers an opportunity to improve their skills, learning from some of the best in the business, and maximize their enjoyment of some of the great fishing sites that we have in Mississippi." Bassmaster University covers mainstream techniques such as plastic worms, crankbaits, topwater, flipping and pitching, and spinnerbaits. It also covers lesser-known techniques such as fishing the floating worm, finesse fishing and electronics, as well as advanced techniques for catching bass from mid-lake structures. Other expert instructors include Chad Brauer, Rich Tauber and Greg Hawk. The accelerated course features 12 different one-hour workshops. Enrollment for the entire two-day event is $109, $55 for spouses and $55 for children under 16 who attend with an adult who is paying full price for the course.
